CHAPTER TEN

Ava

I was a little miffed when I realized that Brigham had left this morning before I had woken up, but I decided to not be too angry with him. I can understand when things happen with work, but I still have yet to find out what he actually does. It’s honestly a little bit frustrating if you ask me, feeling like he was hiding something important from me.

My body was really sore too, having to endure round after round last night. I don’t even remember when we stopped, but he must’ve cleaned me up afterward before he went to bed. I pulled on my robe, going to make coffee as in his note, he said he wouldn’t be too long. I’m not sure when he left, but it must’ve not been too long ago.

Picking up my phone that I had turned off, I sipped on my coffee, wondering if Sasha had tried to text me. That’s when I saw I had a few missed calls from her, and one last text message. I debated on opening her message, not wanting to hear about what she thought about Brigham, but, I decided I could at least look at it without responding.

I didn’t like what I read.

Ava, that man you’re seeing… he is a part of the Mafia. He is dangerous.

Mafia? I snorted in annoyance, not believing what she was saying. I know that Brigham could be a little scary, but a part of the Mafia? Ha! I really doubt that. Don’t you think he would’ve said something to me if that were the case? Would he hide that?

It was a sinking feeling.

It wasn’t an impossible idea.

My head jerked as I heard a key being inserted into the doorknob, realizing that Brigham must’ve taken my apartment key. I rose to my feet, going to greet him, but I froze in horror when I saw him walk through the door, covered in blood.

Oh my god.

“Brigham.” I whispered, watching him close the door behind himself, “it’s true…”

Brigham sighed, shaking his head, “I apologize that I didn’t tell you the truth about what I do, Ava. I’m not going to lie to you. I do things that other people wouldn’t dream about doing. The Mafia… they are like my family. I grew up with them being like my brothers, and I know that for the rest of my life, I am never going to leave that lifestyle behind. I don’t want to lose you, I know this, but I won’t blame you if you don’t want me now.”

I knew what he meant, and I knew that he was giving me the chance to walk away. It was tempting but I couldn’t. After everything that I’ve learned, there’s just a part of me that knows that even if I were to walk away now, I would regret it for the rest of my life.

Drawing in a deep breath, I walked toward him. I saw how tense he was, expecting the worse. I reached up, gently cupping his cheeks as I leaned up on my tippy toes, pressing my lips softly against his in a short kiss.

“I love you.” I told him softly, being careful of the blood, “and thank you for being honest… I’m not going anywhere.”

His forehead rested on mine, sighing in contentment, “I’m happy to hear that, baby girl, because you’re my everything now.”

And like that, I had my Mafia daddy, and I wasn’t going to let him go.

Never in my lifetime.
