CHAPTER TWO

Brigham

Whack! Whack! Whack!

The sickening sounds of my fists slamming into this bastard’s face brought me a sort of peace that I’ve been missing the past couple of days. Gurgling sounds escaped the man, his eyes swollen shut and his lip and nose busted, blood splattering everywhere with each hit. His body had gone limp a long time ago, but I didn’t feel like letting him go so easily. He knew what would happen if he dared to mess with my family, and now he’s to face the consequences.

“You’ll kill him, Brigham.” Liam muttered from where he was leaning against the wall outside the club, on the lookout, “we really don’t want to have the cops snooping around for a murderer, do we?”

As much as I wanted to defy him, I knew he was right. I dropped the piece of shit like a sack of potatoes, hearing his body hit the ground with a loud thud. He coughed loudly, rolling onto his side as he spits out blood and I think even a knocked-out tooth. I grabbed a rag, wiping his blood off of my hand.

“I assume I’m not going to have to come back here to finish the job, right?” I stated coldly, throwing the rag onto his trembling body, “because next time, my buddy here won’t be able to stop me from turning you into a cold corpse.”

The man weakly shook his head but was unable to form any words. I took pity on him, assuming that I must’ve made his mouth too swollen to even be able to say anything to me. I sighed, burying my hands into my pockets as I walked away, Liam close behind me.

“Well, that was no fun.” I muttered, glancing up at the neon sign of the club that we frequently come to, “I think I’m going to go in here and find myself a lady for the night, Liam. Don’t wait for me.”

“We’re supposed to go back to meet Graham!” He protested, but I really didn’t care.

“I’m sure he won’t care.” I responded, waving goodbye to him, “he’s probably at home with his wife. It’s late, go home, Liam.”

I gave him no time to protest as I stepped through the door to the club, feeling the ground thumping beneath my feet from the music. I’ve never really been one for the club life, but I know this was the best place to find a girl for the night. I have never been one to settle down, knowing what kind of life I have, and I really didn’t want to bring a female into it. It wouldn’t be fair to them, to never know if the next day would be their last. It’s even possible that I could be the one to die, and I don’t want to leave them that way.

Making my way over to the bar, I knew I was being watched by the females in the vicinity. My lips twitched into a slight smirk, feeling the cockiness overcome me as I fought the urge to look at some of them and wink. Although I did only want a partner for the night, I wasn’t just going to screw someone who threw themself at me. It wasn’t in my nature to screw a girl over by losing me.

I’ve seen that more times than I’d like to remember.

“Scotch on the rocks,” I told the bartender, seeing it was someone new so they wouldn’t know what I was ordering.

As I was waiting there patiently, I couldn’t help but feel like something was wrong. Glancing over slightly, curious, I saw a tall, very drunk man leaning against the bar, looking like he was humping the air. I thought that was exactly what he was doing, but when I saw his arm move, I realized he had a girl pinned against the bar, and as her wide, frightened blue eyes met mine, something took over me.

Before I realized what was happening, I had grabbed him by the shoulder and yanked him away from her, causing him to stumble back and land on his ass. Everyone around us had frozen, watching the scene unfold as I towered over him, my hands balling into fists as I felt this boiling rage fill me. I’ve seen this sort of stuff happen before and calmly fixed it, but when I saw her, it was like the beast inside of me had woken up, and it was out for blood.

“Man, what the fuck?” The bastard blurred, trying to stumble his way to his feet, “what was that for? I did nothing wrong.”

“You’re drunk,” I calmly muttered, trying to calm myself down before I did something that would get me into a lot of trouble, “and I know that woman did not give you permission to be groping her like that. I want you to walk away while I am still asking nicely.”

His eyes narrowed into slits, looking aggravated, “oh? What are you going to do, tough guy? The slut has it coming to her. Look at what she’s wearing.”

This man really has a death wish, I concluded as I took a step forward, tempted to do exactly that, “what she is wearing does not matter. You always ask permission before touching what isn’t yours. Am I clear?”

I had this feeling that he was going to continue to argue with me, and I really didn’t want to listen to it. I moved my coat aside, flashing the gun slightly just to make it known to him that he really didn’t want to fuck with me. I saw him tense up, his eyes flicking down to where my gun was as he gulped.

“Sorry, dude, it was an honest mistake!” He responded quickly, “it won’t happen again!”

He stumbled off before I could say or do anything else, having quickly sobered up. I knew that no one else had seen the gun because they all went back to what they were doing and didn’t throw a fit. Feeling a curious gaze on me, I carefully turned around, not wanting to frighten her as my eyes landed on the woman I had just protected.

Lord have mercy on my soul.

Like an angel from above, I swore that there was this light shining around her like a blessing coming from God. She was all legs, I mused as my eyes drifted along her slender, but curvy body, seeing how big her hips and ass were, and wondering if her breasts would fit into the palm of my hand. Her black hair was cropped short, almost pixie-like, and her dark blue eyes seemed to suck into my soul. I was hard almost instantly, wanting those pretty pink lips around me, and as I ravage her body, having her screaming daddy beneath me.

“Are you okay?” I asked her softly.

She looked like she was going to respond, but before anything could be said, I heard a girl practically screeching, “oh my god, Ava, that was sooooooooooo scary!”

This chick was lucky that I didn’t deem her as a threat as she latched onto my arm, looking up at me in what I guessed to be a seductive way. All it did was make me want to hurl but when I saw Ava’s expression fall, looking away from us, I knew instantly then what was going on. I shook the girl off of me, seeing the shocked look on her face but I didn’t give a damn. I stepped forward, gently grabbing Ava’s wrist, seeing her shocked eyes meet mine.

“I asked if you were okay, beautiful,” I murmured, wanting her to feel as comfortable with me as possible.
