“Yeah. I tried to convince my brother, Tim, to have it before I had to leave town, but the thing about being a local in Door County is that you are too busy working during peak tourist season to have a wedding, so we always get married in the shoulder seasons there. For Tim and Tami, that’s October. I had to get to Paradise Isles to get my customers’ boats ready for the season, so it just meant flying back in. No biggie, really.” I chuckled. “Well, it wasn’t supposed to be a biggie until our plane almost crashed, and I ended up escorting some random girl on a road trip halfway across the country.”

“Hey! I’m not just some random girl!” She frowned.

“Well, not anymore, but when we first started this trip, you kinda were.”

After twisting her face and staring at me, she finally started to laugh. “Okay, valid. I thought you may be a murderer, and I was just some random girl.”

“Exactly. And now look at us.”

“Friends,” she said, and the word felt like a dagger to the heart.

Ouch.

“Yep, friends,” I responded, though I wanted to be anything but. You don’t want to shove your tongue in your friend’s mouth and do things with her body that would make a sinner blush.

“Do we have time for me to take a shower quick? I’m really feeling gross from all the travel, and I didn’t shower on the train.”

“Yeah, of course. We don’t have to be there until Friday technically for the rehearsal dinner.”

“You know.” She put her finger on her cheek. “You really haven’t slept since we landed in New York. I mean, maybe an hour or two on the train.”

None. I had been too turned on by our kiss and too focused on her body above me to get a wink on that train.

“Do you want to crash here on my couch for the night, and we can leave first thing in the morning? Then we’ll be there by Thursday afternoon to get settled in with plenty of time to get you ready for the rehearsal dinner.”

I twisted my lips. “Honestly, sleep does sound amazing. I’m a traveling machine, but this is even a bit much for me.”

“Okay, it’s settled! I’ll order pizza, we’ll crash here tonight, and then first thing in the morning, the road trip continues.”

“You’re having pizza?” I arched an eyebrow and smirked. “But you said rule number one was back in play.”

Her face bloomed into a carousel of colors. “Uh, Chinese. Let’s order Chinese instead.”

I busted out laughing and sunk deeper into her bed, folding my arms behind my head. “Chinese it is. But if you change your mind and want pizza, I’m not gonna argue.”

“I’m showering.” She covered her face and bolted into the bathroom.

“I’ll be here when you get out,” I called, my laughter still threaded in my words.

Yeah. She still wants the pizza.
