My heart dropped at her answer, but I understood her motivation. We didn’t live anywhere near each other, and spending five days nooked up together having kisses like that one would certainly make saying goodbye more difficult.

“Is that okay? Do you still want me to come if we are just going to be friends and go back to the no kissing rule? I can catch a different cab and head back if you want.”

“Yes. Of course,” I answered quickly because I did. Even if it may drive me insane to spend five days with her and not feel those lips on mine again, I still wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I just wanted to be in her orbit a little longer.

“Okay, then. Rule number one is reinstated.” She stuck out her hand.

I arched an eyebrow. “You’re not gonna grab me and kiss me again?”

“No. Definitely not,” she answered, but I saw the flicker of a lie in her eyes.

Hoping she was going to blow up her own rule once more, I grabbed her hand and shook it. “We have a deal.”

With an exaggerated shake, we sealed our deal then I grabbed her bags. “Come on. The car rental place is just two blocks away. We can walk.”

“When we grab the car, do you think we could swing by my apartment quick so I can grab something to wear for the wedding? All I have in my suitcase are little sundresses, and I don’t know if that’s appropriate for a fall wedding in Door County.”

“Sure. No problem at all.”

We grabbed our rental car then she gave me directions to her place. After parking, I carried her bags upstairs, and we went inside. As expected, everything was perfectly neat and clean and more organized than any place I’d ever been.

“Jesus,” I said as I glanced at the shoes lined up in her closet when she opened it. “Are those color-coordinated?”

“Oh, yes. Color-coordinated, and also based on heel height.”

Her clothes were also hung perfectly with the colors coordinated within the sleeve length. T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and dresses were all perfectly organized.

“What happens if I do this?” I stepped into her walk-in closet and grabbed a black shirt, then stuck it between the different shades of pink.

Her eyes widened, and she quickly put it back. “I would go crazy.”

Laughing, I sat back down. “Damn, Ivy. You do need to loosen up a little.”

She peeked over her shoulder. “I happen to like my organization systems. Makes life much easier when I always know where everything is and what to expect.”

I glanced up at the calendar on her wall, surrounded by color-coordinated post-it notes with an array of little reminders for things to do.

“I’m more of a toss my clothes in a pile and reach in and pull something out then toss it on kind of a guy. Like the claw game, but for clothes. It’s always a surprise what I’m going to be wearing.”

Ivy smiled. “That doesn’t surprise me at all.”

I flopped onto her bed and clasped my hands behind my head. “No plans, no organization, just go where the wind may blow. That’s my style.”

“Well, I happen to like my style, but I will admit, I’m going to be doing some more impulsive things now. Things that I don’t have a plan for and aren’t on any of my calendars or any of my agendas. Things like going to a wedding in Door County.”

She grinned wide and spun around, holding up a gorgeous black dress. “Will this work? I’m not sure how fancy or casual the wedding is.”

“That is absolutely perfect,” I answered, already imagining how it would hug her curves in all the right places. “It’s at the Horseshoe Bay Golf Club, so fancy. But the weather is always unpredictable in October, so maybe grab a shawl or something to cover your arms if you get cold.”

“Good idea.” She spun back into her closet and then emerged with the perfect little shoulder shawl. “This should work great.”

“Perfect.”

“And you? Are you going in flip-flops and board shorts?”

“A tux,” I answered back. “I’m the best man, so my brother is forcing me. It’s in Door County. I got fitted this summer before I left, and my brother is picking it up.”

“Too bad the wedding couldn’t happen before you left, huh?” She carefully folded the dress and put it in her bag. “Save you an extra trip?”
