“If you ever change your mind, you know where to find me. In the meantime, I think it’s best if we don’t stay in touch because it’s gonna be killing me not to be with you. I don’t think I can handle it.”

“I understand.” And I did. There was no way I could stay in touch with him either without losing all my resolve to stay out of his arms. Just the sound of his voice over the phone would make me abandon my new plans and hop on the first flight to see him.

“I’m gonna miss you, Ivy. So fucking much.”

“I’m gonna miss you too.” The tears started streaming down my cheeks.

Ethan reached across the car and pulled my mouth to his, impaling me with the power of his kiss and sending those shockwaves coursing through my body. I kissed him long and hard, my lips refusing to do what my mind knew it had to do, and let him go. Finally, he brushed his lips softly against mine one last time, then broke apart our kiss.

“I don’t want to say goodbye,” I choked out as he cupped my face in his hands. “I don’t know how to say goodbye.”

“Then don’t.” He brushed a piece of hair from my eyes. “Then let’s say, ‘I’ll see you later.’”

I swallowed over the lump in my throat as I nodded. “Okay, then. I ... I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll see you later, Ivy,” he said back, and his beautiful eyes shined with tears.

A sob escaped my lips as I ripped myself out of his arms and out of the car. With agony crushing my heart and making breathing nearly impossible, I pulled open the back door and grabbed my bag, pausing to look at him once more. I shattered into a million pieces seeing the look in his eyes before I closed the door. Everything in my body screamed at me to get back in and go with him, but I held fast and stood steady on the curb as I watched him pull away and out of my life.

And I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again.
