I push the car into its highest gear, and easily gain ground on the SUV.

Pulling up beside the car, I glance over to see a terrified Evi gripping the wheel as she stares straight forward. I have half a mind to pull out in front of her and force her to slow down, but I’m afraid that might only make things worse.

Instead, I decide to flicker the headlights a few times to try to get her attention.

It works, but not quite as intended.

Evi glances over and freezes at the sight of me just as pair of high beams suddenly blind me out of nowhere, forcing me to swerve off the road and straight into a tree.

When I finally wake and stumble from the wreckage, the moon is already high in the sky.

“Damn it,” I growl, rolling my shoulders and cracking my neck as I check for any bones that need to be reset.

Thankfully, everything seems to be in the right place, despite how sore I feel. Stepping onto the tarmac, I cock my head to the side as I notice another car’s lights are blinking further down the road.

I jog toward it, realizing as I draw closer that it’s the SUV, only it’s not right-side up, and I break into a sprint.

The driver’s side door is nowhere to be found, and neither is Evi, but there’s more than enough blood everywhere to have me swearing.

Where could she have gone in such a state?

As I straighten, to look toward the forest, I suddenly notice a long silver hair caught in the ragged edges of the metal.

Plucking it from the doorframe, I hold it up to the light, fury rising in me as I set my jaw.

So, the door didn’t come off in the crash; it was torn off after the fact.

And I can only think of one silver-haired creature capable of doing such a thing …

Valentine.
