“No! It would break my heart to not see Sofi anymore, but that’s not why I’m telling you all this.”

“I’m glad you care about Sofi.”

After hearing her name so many times, Sofi put a hand on my face and looked at me with big, questioning eyes. God, she was so sweet and smart.

“What is it, baby girl? I was just telling your uncle how much I love you.” She made some sounds and out of nowhere Hunter laughed his ass off.

“What? She sounds really funny when she tries to speak.”

“She is just as demanding as you are. I swear, if I didn’t know it, I would have thought she’syourdaughter.”

“What in God’s name are you talking about?”

I shrugged.

“She looks a lot like you.”

“She looks like my sister.”

When Hunter turned to his eggs, I knew that this conversation was over, but I was more than pleased with that. We had breakfast in peace and soon after, Sofi started drifting to sleep in my arms. The morning sun was too much for her, apparently.

“I should go put her down for a nap.”

“I need to talk to you about one more thing, baby.”

“Sure.”

“Starting Monday, I want you to use one of my cars for transportation. I also hired a driver for you.”

“I…why?”

“I want you and Sofi to have protection when I’m not around to look over you.”

“Hunter, I know my car is not the latest model, but it’s sturdy.”

“Well, your car is not bulletproof, but mine are. Full disclosure, the driver is a trained security detail and he’ll be carrying a firearm at all times.”

My brows gathered, confused by these details. No one said anything about security when I interviewed with him.

“I can take care of Sofi. You don’t need to hire someone to make sure of it.”

“Baby,” he sighed. “The San Diego PD called me this morning. Sofi’s father was spotted in Nevada yesterday. They fear that he might be trying to get close to her.”

“Oh, my God.” My arms tightened around Sofi’s little body. “He’s not in custody?”

“Not yet.” His voice was hard. This was obviously hard for him. The man who murdered his sister in cold blood was out there, free, and now he was getting close. “Trust me, I have people combing the streets looking for that motherfucker. The security here will increase until he’s behind bars.”

“Of course. I will do whatever you think needs to be done and I will try to stay inside as much as possible.”

“I don’t want you to live in fear, Amelia. I have everything under control.” It was very important to him—to have everything under control. “I’ll take care of you both.”

“Oh, Hunter.” Slowly, I let Sofi down in her booster seat and went to go sit in his lap and put my hands around his shoulders. “I know you will, but who’s going to take care of you?”

“Raoul was a marine. He has been in charge of my security for a few years now. I’ll be fine.”

“I know, baby, but this can’t be easy for you. That man, Sofi’s father, he…” I couldn’t even bring myself to say it. “This can’t be easy.”

He grabbed my hip and squeezed.
