“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…”
“Say it again.”
Being her natural self, she didn’t give a shit about my demand, but instead wrapped herself in the silk sheet and tried to escape me. Too bad I was a fast motherfucker. My arms were around her waist and she was glued to my chest before her feet touched the floor.
“Say the fucking words, Amelia.”
“No.”
“Why the hell not?”
“God, I’m so ashamed. How many women have dropped at your feet and declared their love to you? What lucky number am I?”
“No one, baby. I’ve never heard…just you.”
“Hunter, that’s impossible. You’re…you. I tried to fight it, but how could I not fall? You’re a damn God.”
If I would have had a weak heart, it would have given out right now.
“I’m not a God, but you must be a fucking angel. Tell me the words, kitten.”

I was not alone. She was here and she wanted to stay. Finally. God damn it.
“Let’s go to sleep. I need to hold you.”
“I need to be held.”
Her head was on my shoulder while I stroked her back gently. She loved me. I had millions of thoughts that made no sense, and trying to put them in order was a lost fight. Instead, I held Amelia close, enjoying the way she made me feel. She was the calm to my storm.
Suddenly, her words from earlier crossed my mind.
“Are you asleep yet, kitten?” I knew she wasn’t, her breath was irregular.
“No.”
“Earlier at the restaurant you said your life wasn’t easy either. Tell me.”
“Hunter, not tonight.”
“You know my secrets. Can’t I know yours?”
She took a deep breath and then whispered, “My secrets were sealed by the court. It’s not a pretty story, Hunter, and you have enough ugly in your life. You don’t need mine too.”
I’d turned to stone under her. What the hell happened? Now, more than ever, I needed to know.
“Amelia, what happened?”
“Let’s talk about it another time.”
“Did someone hurt you?” I got back up and grabbed her by the shoulder. “If someone hurt you, you’ll tell me right now. Right this second, or I swear to God…”
“Hey, calm down, baby. It’s…It’s why I don’t want you to give Sofi away.”
“Meaning?”
