I turned to my girl and joked, “So, we have to survive a fighting tournament to the death ten times to win our freedom. Good thing I took my vitamins.”

“How much are you willing to bet those suckers never made it home?” I nodded as my girl finished her observation.

Baxter wasn’t known for his charitable soul. Making people believe they had a chance, however? Totally up his alley.

“What are you saying?” the kid asked in a panic. “You think they were killed? That isn’t possible. They were freed. We saw them leave.”

“Calm down, breathe,” I told him as he hyperventilated.

“What’s going on, Kid?” When he remained silent, I insisted further, “Tell me.”

“My mother sold herself to a man to get us off the island. He promised he would get her and me out of here.”

Well, I had news for him, the man lied. I couldn’t see Baxter giving in for one person, much less two. But Diego didn’t need to know this, so I bit my tongue to keep the words from crossing my lips and destroying the poor kid’s hope.

“Tell us about the fighters.”

“Your biggest threat is Nam and her team.” The boy pointed to a bunch of tough-looking fighters led by a tall, muscular woman.

“They have been here for a long time and are at their ninth win.”

“So, this will be their tenth?”

“Yes.”

This just keeps getting better and better. Next thing you know, he’ll be telling me we’re going to have live spectators during this shit fest.

“Oh, and you will have to watch out for the crowd.”

Of course we would.

You had to hand it to these bastards, they sure knew how to put on a show.

I set aside the rage that grew inside of me. I’d work too damn hard to get to this point, and I wasn’t going to blow it now.

I had to focus on the task ahead, which right now was figuring out how to put these motherfuckers out to pasture.

Preferably with a bullet to their forehead.
