“You can’t escape, purgatory, Miss. There is no way off the island. Everybody here works for the boss, and they won’t help. They will only kill you.”

It was time to change the subject. “How old is this place?”

“Old, maybe a hundred years or so.”

“And how many buildings are there?”

“Six. Two are houses for the guards, and another three are for the fighters.”

“How many fighters are we talking about here?”

“There are always at least twelve fighters for Phase One. Sometimes, there are more. It depends on how good the batch is.”

I frowned in confusion and asked, “Phase One?”

“They divided the tournament into three phases with an increasing level of difficulty. In phase one, you have twelve fighters who will fight to the death in a one-on-one.”

“Are they allowed any weapon?”

“No, not until the end of the match. If the other fighter is still alive, the guard gives you something to kill your opponent.”

“Great. Just fucking great.”

“In phaseII, the winners of phase one are divided into two teams and pitted against one another until only one team remains.”

“So, you’re supposed to make friends with the people trying to kill you?”

“Exactly.”

“What happens when no team wants you or you don’t want to join any team?”

“You die.”

Of course you would. Nothing beats facing a team of dangerous animals by yourself.

“And finally, phasethree follows phase two. The winning team must select their champion to face off against the organizer’s chosen in a fight where winner takes all. If your champion loses, they will throw all the members of the team into the pit.”

“Why don’t I like the sound of that?”

“It’s terrible. You have to fight against wild animals.”

“Great,” I sigh.

“What happens if you win?”

There had to be an ultimate prize. How else could Baxter get all these people to fight and not give up?

“If you win, ten Combats Royales, you win your freedom.”

Sure, you do, and I have a bridge I want to sell you.

“How many teams have come out of this victorious?”

“One.”

“You saw them leave the island?”

“Yes, they showed it on the television.”
