Chapter 31

Sarah

Palo Alto, California

Two Weeks Later

“Wakey, wakey, Mousy.”

“I don’t think you’re supposed to jog patients awake, Tee.”

“Fine, you try it, Miss-know-it-all. Or are you telling me you’re not bored to death right now?”

“No, I’m not. And will you hush? While I know you don’t mean any of the shit you say, others don’t. They’re going to think you’re a heartless bitch.”

“Let them think whatever. I know the truth. It’s enough for me.”

Tee wasn’t heartless. In fact, it was quite the other way around, her heart was too big for her scrawny chest. She was just stressed, and my little adventure probably had something to do with that.

After Calum and Asheron found me in the infirmary, they stabilized my wound and gave me a transfusion in the chopper, while we waited for my husband, Vasily, and the rest of the men to arrive.

The pilot flew us off the island to a Guild Hospital in Mozambique, where they operated on me to repair the damages to my body. I stayed there for almost a week before I was stable enough to fly home.

Diego and his mother came to thank me and said their goodbyes while I recuperated in Africa.

So did Surinam. She had a heartbreaking reunion with Bones and the Cajun, and the three left together for the States. Hopefully, they’ll patch up their relationship.

By the way, holy mother of God, why did no one warn me those two had grown into such handsome men? My husband was thrilled to hell and back when I almost swallowed my tongue at the sight of Bones’ tall, muscular frame and Cajun’s sweet whiskey eyes.

My girls drove to Palo Alto the minute they were told I was coming home and decorated it with thousands of purple balloons and the ugliest welcome banner in history. It was so ugly, I hugged my crazy ass friends, cried, and promptly passed out.

We’re not talking dainty tears here, but snot everywhere. This made Oli swallow several times and someone (Eric) gave him and me a tissue.

Of course, Slims hit that someone (again my husband) in the arm to show he was a tough guy, but everyone knew he was a softy when it came to women, so he shouldn’t have bothered. You should see him with his mom and two sisters.

But I digress. This was the first time I’d seen Sass and Tee since Lizzie and I had our fall out. I’d been lying in my bed for the past couple of seconds, unsure about what to say and how to act.

I didn’t know how much they knew, but I was pretty sure they were going to ask me where Birdie was, and once I told them, all bets were off.

I knew I was being a coward, but not opening my eyes made it seem less real somehow.

“Ohhhh, she’s coming to.” I put on my greatest imitation of a waking patient and slowly opened my eyes.

“Hey, Mousy. How are you feeling?”

“Good, but can I have some water, please?” My throat was parched.

“Here you go, Boo.” Tee handed me a glass filled with liquid, and I took a huge gulp.

“How are you feeling? Good?” Sass prodded.

“Yes. Why?” I asked her suspiciously.

“So, she can scream at you some. What the hell were you thinking, Sarah?” Tee just called me by my first name. This was not good.

“And don’t even think about lying to us, we saw you!”

“You saw me where?”
