I loved how his beautiful green eyes lit up when he saw me, or how my mind went completely blank when he bent down to kiss me hello.

“Has anyone heard from Birdie? I left her several messages, but she’s not answering. This isn’t like her.”

“Maybe she’s on her way here. Let me call her,” Tee added.

“Don’t,” I said.

“Don’t what?” Tee asked, confused.

“Don’t call her. She’s probably busy.”

“Too busy to make sure you’re all right?” The incredulous expression on Sass’ face was reflected on Tee’s before becoming suspicious.

“What are you not telling us?”

“Nothing.”

“What’s going on, Mousy? This is the second thing you’re keeping from us, and I want to know what it is,” Sass said.

No, she didn’t.

“I…” a discreet throat clearing interrupted the happy reunion.

“Do you have room for one more?” A beautiful blond woman I never thought I’d see again stood about three feet from us with her husband.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner. My husband pulled a nasty trick on me and declared a no-fly zone for yours truly,” Lizzie said apologetically, while staring daggers at Asheron.

“You should be on bed rest.”

“Why? Is there something wrong with the baby?” Sass questioned, and everyone stared at the Russian with a mix of consternation and worry.

“Nothing like that.”

“Then why would she be on bed rest?” Sass pressed on.

“Her doctor thought it was best.”

“The doctor, right. Not my husband at all.” Lizzie looked at him suspiciously before going around to hug the people in the room.

“Hi Tee,” she smiled as they greeted each other with kisses on the cheeks.

“Hey, Girl. We were just talking about you.”

“All good, I hope.”

“Please, like I could say anything bad about you. Me, on the other hand,” Tee joked.

Then it was Sass’ time. “Birdie, I missed you so much. It hasn’t been the same since you left us for Russia.”

“I know, I’m so sorry, I haven’t called sooner.”

“Don’t be. You’re here now. That’s what matters.”

When it was my turn, Elizabeth and I watched each other awkwardly, making Tee glare at us. She was probably wondering what the hell was going on. Who could blame her?

“Well? Give each other a hug, you morons,” she said and, mindful of Lizzie’s injury, gently pushed her toward me only to run into her scary husband.

Lizzie shook her head before sidestepping Asheron and giving me a tentative side hug. “I’m really glad you’re all right, Mousy.”
