“Because he just got in way over his head.”

I stayed silent as the boy keyed in some command at the speed of light.

“Fuck, too late.”

“What’s going on? What are you doing?”

“I’m getting the hell out of there.”

“Why?”

“Because the person just flagged Winthrop Financials security.”

“That’s not good.”

“No, shit.” I watched him pace his room.

“What are you not telling me?”

“I got the location of the person. They’re at the library.”

“So?”

“Moose, it’s 1AM. The place is closed and there’s no one there, so whoever is doing this is either a rogue security guard, a tech with too much time on his hand, or a prodigy squatting in the library.”

“Right.”

“I have to find him.”

“Why would you want to do that?”

“He accessed Winthrop Financials server like it was nothing.”

“Yeah, but so can you.” Gabe looked at me impatiently.

“It’s not the same thing. I already had access to it. He didn’t. The level of skill it requires to go through the firewalls is phenomenal.”

“How good can he be if you were able to catch him?”

“Those are two separate issues. The programming was ingenious, but it had one minor flaw, and you know how I am with those.”

Right. Winthrop zoomed in on weaknesses and chomped on them like a piranha with a leg of lamb. If you don’t believe me, ask Kobe.

“With a little practice, he could be phenomenal. Too bad he won’t get the chance.”

“Why are you saying that?”

“Think about it. If I know where he is, then so do they. By now, they sent in a security team to find him.”

Shit. If that’s true, whoever it is just signed themselves up for some intense hurt.

“Maybe he’ll be fine,” I said, making Gabe arched an eyebrow at me.

“Do you believe that?”

“No, I don’t.”

“Neither do I.”
