“Ah, yes. It is rumbling tonight.” I could hear the laughter in his voice. “And the salty air is so…”

“Invigorating,” I added. “The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain,” I said in a British accent.

He huffed out a laugh. “I’m not sure I want to know what that was.”

“Well, Eliza Doolittle said it inMy Fair Lady. And we were talking about the salty air, and it just came to me.”

“I would not have connected those two.”

“Well, then I’m not sure we can be friends,” I teased. “I have to be able to quote random things with someone that understands what I’m talking about.”

“You have high expectations of your friends.”

“Or really low ones,” I said thoughtfully.

We stopped outside my cottage. I was surprised how quickly the walk passed. And now I stood with him on the stoop, thinking about what it would be like to kiss him. But I wasn’t really free to do that, no matter how much I wanted it.

“Well, I should get inside,” I smiled, barely seeing his shadowed face in the moonlight.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, glancing down at his feet. “Well, thank you for not making me eat alone tonight.”

“Likewise.”

I hesitated still, but for what reason, I wasn’t sure. No one would ever have to know if I kissed another man. There were no reporters here. But I would know, and I couldn’t live with a secret like that.

“Goodnight, James.”

“Goodnight, Rose.”
