“I know,” he bit out, running his hand through his hair. Sighing, he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close. “I’ll fix this. I don’t know how, but I will.”

Resting my head against his chest, I murmured, “Don’t make promises you can’t keep. We both know all too well there are some things that aren’t in our control.”

He stepped back, his eyes shining earnestly. “If I could find a way out of this, would you want to take it?”

“Does it end with us being together in the end?”

“That’s the goal.”

I nodded. “If you could get us out of this, and we could just be ourselves and live our lives, I’d leave with you in a heartbeat.”

“Then I swear to you, I will do everything I can to find a way to accomplish that.”

“And what about us in the meantime?”

“What do you mean?”

“James, it doesn’t matter if you can get us out of this if we can’t get along now. We were so in love on that island. I want that back. I wantusback. We barely speak to each other now, and when we do, we’re always arguing. What’s the point in fighting for us if we hate each other in the end?”

He was silent for a moment and then nodded. “You’re right. From now on, when I get home, my phone will be off.”

“Mine too,” I smiled.

He wrapped his hand around the nape of my neck and pulled me close. “So, you want to go to bed? I can give you a foot massage.”

“Do we have to have sex? I gotta be honest with you, I’m not sure I have the energy for it.”

He smiled as he pressed my lips to his. “Just a foot massage tonight.”

I moaned as he slipped his hand to the base of my back and rubbed. “And maybe a soak in the hot tub?”

“As long as you don’t pee on me,” he grinned against my lips.
