I pulled my hand back, the anger from last night finally rising up inside me. I was tired of coming in last, and as long as he was CEO of this company, that would be my position in his life. I stood and walked over to my dresser.

“It would have been nice to have you home. I had a big day at work, and then I had to come home and celebrate alone.”

“I’m sorry, Rose. I couldn’t help it.”

“It was my first client I landed,” I argued. “Maybe that means nothing to you, but—”

“But what?” he snapped, sitting up to face me. “You sold pretty things to a client. I’m so happy,” he said sarcastically.

“You’re such an asshole,” I said angrily. “This means something to me, more than you could ever know because you’re never home.”

“Rose, I’m busting my ass at work every day. I’ve barely slept in months. I was up all night working on this deal, and now I have to go to this fucking dinner with people I despise. I’m so tired I can’t think straight, and you’re busting my ass over not being home to celebrate one night.” He stood and walked over to me. “I get it. You’re happy in your job. Perfect. That’s fucking great. I’m happy you’re happy.”

“Are you?” I snapped. “Because the only person you seem to care about is you!”

“I’m doing all of this for you!” he shouted. “For us. I’m trying to get us out of this fucking contract!”

“How would I know that? You don’t talk to me. You barely look at me. I’m part of this marriage too!”

He tore off his tie angrily and ripped open his shirt. Buttons went flying everywhere as he continued to tear at his clothes. “What the fuck do you want from me, Rose? What more can I do for you? You have to tell me, because I’m busting my ass for you. I’m like a slave to that goddamn companyfor you.So, if you have any better ideas, I would love to hear them. Please fucking tell me so we can end this charade and just fucking live our lives!” he shouted.

Something inside me broke as I heard him call our lives a charade. I didn’t want to believe that he really felt that way, but the anger coming off him in waves was unmistakable. I stood there, unable to move or even think. It was like my heart was breaking in two. This was what our lives had become, the two of us yelling at each other because it was all we knew how to do.

He sighed and sat down on the bed, his shoulders hunched over. “Rose…”

“I need to go,” I replied, not even bothering to wait for him to answer. I heard him call for me as I grabbed my purse and rushed to the elevator. His footsteps pounded behind me as I slammed my hand on the button to take me down. I didn’t have to look up through my wet lashes to see him chasing me.

There was nothing more to say, though. If I went back to him and talked it out, nothing would change. We’d both apologize and move on, but our lives would continue down this miserable path. It was time for it to end. Only then would we have a chance at happiness, even if we weren’t together.
