“I couldn’t. Not until I came back here.”

He nodded, but then pulled out the papers and set them down with a pen. “I think it’s time for Alexander and Kimberley to get a divorce.”

“You…you want a divorce?”

“Well, I can’t propose to a married woman. Been there, done that,” he said, pulling ayikesface.

I bit back my grin, schooling my features. “And if I sign, what are your plans?”

“Marry the woman of my dreams and spend the rest of my life with her in our beach house.”

“No more New York?”

He shook his head. “I sold the company.”

I quickly picked up the pen and wrote my signature. The past six months were wiped out just like that. All he worked so hard for came true and we were finally free. I hadn’t thought it was possible, yet he was standing here with me right now. He held out his hand for me to take, pulling me into his arms as he spun me out and then pulled me back.

“There she is,” he grinned. “My own lovely lady.”

“How did you pull this off?”

He shrugged, a playful smile on his lips. “I couldn’t spend the rest of my life without you. Plus, I still have to finish paying for my crimes against the starfish.”

“And for forking the yard,” I reminded him.

“And if we’re not here, who’s going to catch all the cabbie thieves?”

“I guess we have no choice but to stay here. Someone has to keep the public safe.”

“It’s our duty to this country,” he grinned.

I slid my hand up his arm to the nape of his neck. I loved the feel of his hair slipping through my fingers. “There you are,” I whispered.

His fingers skimmed the side of my neck as he leaned down and brushed his lips against mine. My eyes slipped closed as he kissed me harder, picking me up as he twirled me under the lights of the tiki hut. I vaguely heard some people cheering us on and laughed against his lips.

When he set me down, I smiled up at the man I loved so much. None of the past mattered. We had a future to get started on, and I wasn’t about to waste another moment.

“What now?” I asked.

His eyes seemed to twinkle as he stared down at me. Without the suit and harsh demeanor, I could hardly tell this was the man I had spent the last six months of my life with. Gone was the cold exterior and the man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was just James, and he was all mine.

“Now we escape.”
