“The requirements of being your friend.”

I cocked my head at James, taking in his relaxed state. It was as if nothing had changed from yesterday. He didn’t act any different around his friends, which was refreshing. I hated dating men that were one person in front of me and another with their friends.

Not that we were dating.

“I’ll have to test those as they come,” I finally answered. “It’s got to be natural or it doesn’t work.”

James jerked his chin at me slightly. “So, what are you up to today?”

“Oh, you know. I was wandering the beach, thinking about how terrible it was for you.”

“What do you mean?” his brows furrowed.

“Well, basically being enslaved to this property,” I nodded at the house. “Because of the starfish.”

“And the forking,” he grinned.

Fletch looked between us in confusion. “Am I missing something here?”

“So, I thought I would come offer my services.”

“On your vacation,” he said slowly.

I shrugged, glancing back at the ocean. “What else am I going to do with my time?”

“Enjoy the beach,” Fletch piped up. “That’s what I would do.”

“You’ll get dirty. You might even break a nail,” James said, almost in challenge.

“I think I can handle it.”

“You can’t handle the truth!” he shouted suddenly.

I burst out laughing, pointing at him. “That was a good one. I didn’t see that coming.”

He grinned at me, standing up straighter as if preening. “Well, I like to surprise. And I spent all last night studying movie lines.”

“Yes, but it doesn’t just cover movie territory. There are random songs that also burst into my head.”

He sighed heavily. “I guess another sleepless night hitting the books is in order.”

“Hitting what books?” Fletch asked. “What is he talking about?”

“You’ll find out,” James laughed.
