“Since when does Clarissa wear heels to the beach?” she retorted.

They kept arguing and we watched curiously from our position. Suddenly, Shane scooped Clarissa up against his wet body and started walking into the water. Clarissa grabbed her wide brimmed hat, holding on for dear life. I thought maybe I should intervene, but I kind of wanted to see what would happen. As expected, Shane tossed her into the water, snatching her hat as it flew off her head at the last second. He set it on his head, grinning at us just as Clarissa came flying out of the water, heel in hand as she swung at his head. He barely had time to duck and miss the stealth attack.

“Jesus! Relax, I was just having fun!”

“Fun? This outfit cost me a thousand dollars!”

“Then you overpaid. I wouldn’t pay you ten dollars to wear it, even if a blow job was included!”

I sucked in a breath, grabbing Rose around the waist. “I think that’s our cue to leave.”

I swung her up on my back, gliding through the water and giving Shane and Clarissa a wide berth. I heard the call of a wild banshee and turned just in time to see Clarissa throw herself on Shane, taking him under the waves as she sent her shoe crashing through the water.

“Do you think we should help him?” Rose asked, her grip tightening around my neck.

“Nah, he’s got it.” But I waited anyway to make sure he came up for air. And then I waited some more. Clarissa came spluttering up, her hair plastered to her face now and her white pantsuit a little more see through now that it was soaking wet.

“Goddamnit, woman!” Shane shouted as he rose from the water. “You’re going to kill me with that shoe!”

“Yeah, they should be fine now,” I said, continuing on my way.

“They’re like oil and water. I think we made a mistake that first night Clarissa stayed with him.”

“I lost my damn earrings! Do you know how expensive they were?” Clarissa shouted.

“Probably enough that you could have saved the money for a better boob job,” he shot back.

Her face went comically slack and her nostrils flared. “You’ve touched them enough to know that they are one hundred percent real, and they are fabulous.”

Then his lips crashed into hers and I pulled Rose away. “I think that’s about all we need to see.”

“I can’t believeI agreed to come out with you after what you did,” Clarissa said as we stood in the kitchen.

I pulled down some wine glasses for them and poured some wine while I was waiting for the final response on my previous email to my father. Normally, I would just leave and get the answer when I returned, but this was important. They were going to sign a deal that wasn’t exactly good for the company. Whoever put the deal together would have to be dealt with.

“Clarissa, it’s not like I purposely threw you in the ocean. I was just taking you out for a nice stroll in the water and you jumped out of my arms.”

I barely caught sight of her glaring at him when the response came through. I quickly opened it and read through the email. Fuck, they didn’t stop the deal in time, which meant someone from the company was benefiting greatly from this deal. I had a few ideas in mind of who was behind this deal, one that stood out above the others, but I had no proof. Hell, I wasn’t even in the same fucking state.

“Are you ready to go?” Rose asked as she walked up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist.

I quickly shut the laptop and turned around to face her. “Almost. I just have to make a phone call.” I could see the disappointment in her eyes. She thought I wasn’t going to take her. “Five minutes.”

She nodded slightly.

“Okay, ten minutes, and not a minute more. I promise.”

“It’d better be only ten minutes. No amount of wine could make staying with them tolerable.”

I glanced over her shoulder at Clarissa and Shane arguing. It was nothing new. Every time she’d flown down over the past three months, the same thing happened. They argued for the first two days, and then they seemed to fall madly in love until she had to leave. Shane would get pissy for a few days, and Clarissa would call Rose and cry about how much she missed Shane. Then she would plan her next trip back to the island and the process would start all over again.

“Don’t drink too much. I have a feeling I’ll need your help tonight.”

“With what?”

“Keeping them from killing each other,” I grinned before heading into the other room and closing the door.
