“To show you this…” He grabbed his art portfolio and laid it over my desk, completely disregarding the paperwork that sat there.

“Please, make yourself at home.”

He grinned. “Trust me. You’re not going to care when you see this.” He unzipped it and opened the portfolio to reveal the most incredible beach houses I’d ever seen. Not that I would want any of these over the one I’d built.

I sat up in my chair taking a closer look at the designs. They were perfect—exactly what I had been imagining. Flipping through the pages, I saw what he planned for the interior. High windows, beach colors that were elegant and relaxing, and most of all, comfortable furniture to draw in our guests.

“Shane, this is great. How long are we looking at for a return?”

He laughed at that. “At the cost of these? A very long time. But you came to me because you wanted the best. So, are we moving forward with this?”

“I think you already know the answer to that.”

“Then with a little bit of paperwork, we can be on our way.”

“Fine, fine, I’ll sign the damn paperwork, but you’re coming home with me tonight.”

“God, I love it when you talk dirty to me.”

“So,does Clarissa know I’m here?” Shane asked as we got on the elevator.

“No. I told Rose we should take her out tonight.”

“Why?”

I shrugged. “She didn’t seem to care. In fact, she sounded a little excited about it.”

He glanced over me, his eyebrow raised. “And that doesn’t worry you?”

“Maybe it should, but right now, I’m just glad she didn’t ignore my texts.”

When we stepped off the elevator, I felt like a king. Things were going right tonight. I was only twenty minutes late, so I was getting better every day. Tonight would be the night I turned things around with Rose. I knew it.

And then my phone rang.

“Shit, it’s Alisha.”

“You’re not going to take it, are you?”

“I have to. This could be important.” I answered the call, hoping whatever it was could be taken care of in just a few minutes. “Yes?”

“Mr. Langston, I’m sorry to call you, especially tonight, but there’s a matter we need to take care of.”

“What is it?”

She paused for a moment, then I heard the snick of a door shutting. “Jerry Wright called an emergency board meeting,” she said in a rush. “Something about new information came to light. That’s all I could hear.”

“Wait, where did you hear this?”

“In the building,” she said quickly. “After you left, he showed up. He was waiting outside the boardroom.”

“He’s there now?”

“Yes!” she hissed. “They shut the door, so I can’t hear inside. But whatever this is, it can’t be good.”

“I’ll be right there,” I said, hanging up the phone. I spun toward the door when I heard Rose’s voice. “I have to go,” I said, not bothering to take the time to explain.
