I did, but I wasn’t about to tell her that. I would wait until after she went to sleep. Hell, maybe I’d just start going into the office earlier so I could spend my nights with her.

“No, I finished my work.”

“Okay. I’ll see you soon. I have some exciting news for you.”

“Yeah?”

“Mhmm.”

“Can you give me a hint?”

“Well, I think you’ll be very happy. It’s something I’ve always wanted.”

I imagined us walking through our beach house, all the plans we made for our kids. We hadn’t talked much about the future when we were at the beach, but that was one thing we could both agree on, what we would have if we could be together.

“And it’s going to make me happy.”

“Well, you might not be happy when I start spending money.”

“You know I don’t mind you spending money.”

“Be careful when you say things like that. I might go crazy with the spending.”

“I’ll see you soon.”

I hung up with a smile on my face, imagining her pregnant with my child. I hadn’t really allowed myself to think about her in that way, knowing it could never happen. We’d briefly discussed it the other night, but she didn’t exactly sound happy about the prospect of having kids. Maybe finding out she was pregnant had changed her mind. I could already see her waddling around the apartment, having cravings at all hours of the night, and her asking me to rub her feet. Not to mention that it solved the problem of the child clause of our contract. We had to have two kids in five years, which meant the sooner we started, the better off we’d be.

I was practically beaming when we pulled up to the apartment building. “Jeffrey,” I nodded.

“It’s a beautiful evening, Mr. Langston.”

“It is, and I have a feeling it’s about to get a lot better.”

“Sir?”

“I believe the Mrs. has a special delivery coming up.”

His eyebrows lifted in surprise and a smile filled his face. “That would be excellent news, Mr. Langston.”

“Watch out, Jeffrey. Soon you’ll be herding kids through here.”

He let out a deep belly laugh. “I can’t wait, Mr. Langston. Kids are little miracles.”

“Until you’re up all night with them,” I pointed out. “But I’m up for the challenge.”

I nodded goodnight to him and headed upstairs to my gorgeous wife. When I got off the elevator at the penthouse level, I took off my coat and called out for Rose. When she came walking around the corner, I walked over to her and scooped her up into my arms. “How’s my lovely wife doing?”

“Good,” she giggled.

I set her down gently as anticipation rushed through me. She did look a little different. Her eyes were bright and her skin was flushed. Maybe they were the first signs of her pregnancy.

“So, what’s the big news?” I asked, as if I didn’t already know.

“Not yet. You need to eat. I’ll tell you over dinner.”

“Didn’t you already eat?”

“Yes, but I can munch while you eat.”
