“I’m sorry to have scared you, Jenna. Security let me right in and you opened the door before I could knock.”

“Yeah, I put you and Jax on the approved guest list.” I hate hearing that bastard has access anytime he wants, but it was probably only fair that she put both of our names on the list. She gives her head a little shake, but then looks at me with confusion. “Wait, how are you even here? We just saw you on TV last night in Los Angeles.”

I chuckle and am happy to know they were watching me. “I took the red eye back. It’s time to start getting settled here.” I give her a knowing look, which causes her to blush, and she looks anywhere but at me. I glance at Avery and tap her cute button nose before asking, “Where are you ladies going?”

“I’m taking Avery to school and then working out,” Jenna responds but I keep my gaze on Avery.

“Can I go to school with you?” I ask Avery while tickling her stomach. She giggles and tries to swat my hand away.

“Sure, you can come. It probably would be good for you to see where she goes. Oh, and the principal wants to talk with me today about the paparazzi. She and the rest of the parents aren’t happy with the attention they bring.”

I draw in my eyebrows and frown at this.Fucking paps. Children are supposed to be off-limits, but some of these bastards don’t care. “Yes, let’s meet with her so we can discuss some solutions.”

Jenna grabs Avery’s bag off the floor from where she dropped it and closes the door behind her. I put Avery down, give her a mischievous smile and say, “Race you to the elevators, Avery.” I give her a head start before lightly jogging to keep up with her. Her laughter is infectious and before long, she beats me to the elevator buttons.

“Carry me, Cal. I’m tired,” she complains dramatically, pretending to pant out little breaths. Jenna shakes her head and laughs while we enter the elevator. I do as I’m commanded and pick Avery up.

“Another man wrapped around her little pinky. We are in serious trouble with her,” Jenna shares and I don’t even want to think about my daughter getting older, let alone dating, or any other men she has wrapped around her fingers.

“No boyfriends allowed,” I tell Avery with a stern voice.

“Right,” Jenna says sarcastically while rolling her eyes.

“I already have a boyfriend, Cal.”

I pretend to be shocked, which makes Avery laugh. “Who is this boy, because I must meet him.”

“Well, he lives on a boat and only comes to visit me at nighttime.”

I raise my eyebrow at Jenna, who shrugs while exiting the elevator. “Is your boyfriend a pirate?” I ask, following behind Jenna so she can lead the way.

“No, he’s a prince!” Avery says with excitement. “I’m going to be a princess!” She claps her hands and I chuckle.

“Has he asked you to marry him yet? You know he must ask me—I mean, your mum first.” I catch Jenna’s eye and the little minx actually smirks at me.

“He will once he gets rid of his other girlfriend,” Avery says so casually that I start to choke on my laughter. We stop in front of a black Land Rover and I watch Jenna unlock the car and open the back door for our daughter.

“I understand your dilemma, Avery,” I tell her, giving Jenna a wicked grin. She pretends not to notice, but the blush on her cheeks says otherwise.

“Let me show you how to strap her into her car seat,” Jenna murmurs as I watch her strap Avery in. She closes the door and walks around to the other side while I get into the car.

“Nice ride,” I say, admiring the interior of her car. My mind can’t help but wonder if she bought this with her own money or if it was a gift from Jax.

“Thanks. It was the only thing my ex-husband gave me that I decided to keep,” she answers, as if she was reading my mind. Her revelation surprises me since the car looks brand new. From how she previously expressed her distaste for her ex-husband, I wasn’t expecting her to still have anything from him. She obviously takes care of the car and when I glance over at the dashboard, her mileage confirms that she barely drives.

“How was last night?” she asks, deliberately changing the subject. We pull out of the garage and are immediately bombarded with paparazzi. They enclose both sides of the car, trying to get our attention with questions while they snap our photo.

“Exhausting, but good,” I tell her, trying to hide the irritation by focusing on her question. “Nice to see some people I haven’t seen in a while and a lot of great movies won.”

“Cal, was that girl in the green dress your girlfriend?” Avery asks, and I quickly glance at Jenna to see her reaction at the question. Her eyes are hiding behind sunglasses, so it’s hard for me to tell.

“That is my friend Cora and no, she’s not my girlfriend,” I tell her, continuing to watch Jenna while I answer. “You’ll get to meet her and my friend, Sean, very soon.”

“Yeah! I love meeting new people!” Avery says and we laugh at how cute she sounds.

No more than five minutes later, Jenna makes a left into the parking lot of an office building and pulls into a space. “Wow, we’re here already?” I ask in surprise. My shock quickly turns into anger as I watch a swarm of paparazzi get out of their cars and move closer to the entrance of the building. It seems they figured out Jenna’s morning routine quickly.

“Yes, normally we walk to school, but they’ve been making it difficult to do so.” She nods her head toward the paparazzi. “Avery, put your sunglasses on. You can say hi to these men if you want too, but let’s keep the sunglasses on, okay?” She slides on her sunglasses and is ready to go.
