Braden stacks one folding chair after the other onto the large farmhouse deck.

“At the risk of getting yelled at, do you need any help with those chairs?” I ask.

He turns to me with a smirk. “What? You think I can’t handle some chairs?”

I stack another on the pile as my eyes turn serious. “Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“What’s up?”

Well…

As I look at him, I debate not doing it. But then Maia would probably kick my butt.

“I wanted to ask you something, but it’s a little weird, so—”

He holds his hand up. “Let me stop you right there. I’m not interested in a threesome with you and Maia.”

My shoulders slump and my eyes narrow as he laughs boisterously.

“Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up. I’m trying to be serious.”

He coughs a couple times, then puts on a straight face. Well, almost. Then he starts cracking up again. I grab one of the chairs, unfold it, and sit down. “Just tell me when you’re ready.”

He takes a few deep breaths with laughs breaking through before finally grabbing a chair and sitting down across from me. “What’s up?”

“You’re already making me regret this, but… I was wondering if you’d be comfortable—in any other situation, I’d ask you this—”

“Holy shit, spit it out.”

“Would you be a groomsman in the wedding?”

His eyes widen. “Oh.”

“It’s okay if you’re not up for that, but you are one of the most important people in my life—in Maia’s too, obviously—we’d love for you to be a part of it. But only if you’re okay with it.”

He nods slowly. “Yeah. I—it’s gonna be fuckin’ weird, but what else is new? I want to support you guys. I’d be happy to.”

“Thanks, Brade.”

“One condition.”

“And already regretting this,” I sigh.

“I want to help plan the bachelor party.” I stifle a laugh.Of course.“Gotta make sure it’s not too boring.”

“Great,” I say, rising from the chair. “You can talk to Nick about that. Seriously, though, thank you.”

He inhales deeply as his eyes lock on something behind me. I turn slightly and see Maia walking over, carrying Harper. “I’m happy for you guys.”

“Hey, you two look serious. Everything okay? Do I need to get my dad to throw one of you in the pond?” Maia teases as Harper reaches for Braden.

“Dada!”

He pulls her into his arms and bounces her around as she giggles.

“He was just agreeing to be a groomsman in the wedding.”
