Maia smiles widely and steps over to Braden. “That means a lot to me. Thank you.” They’re in the midst of a half-hug when Harper shoves at Maia and screams, “No, Mama!” Then she wraps her arms around Braden’s neck.
Maia holds up her hands and steps back. “How dare I?”
Braden glances at me. “What’s she gonna call you? When you guys get married. Uncle Vince would be weird.”
I look at Maia, then back to Braden and Harper. “I guess it would be.”
“What are you gonna call him, huh?” Braden asks Harper.
“Bub, Bub!” Harper screeches.
Maia and Braden both start laughing. I roll my eyes. “She just sees the bubbles behind me.”
“No, I think she’s decided,” Braden says. He points at me. “Bub?”
“Bub!” Harper yells.
I turn to Maia for help, but she’s too busy laughing. “It’s perfect.”
I sigh and roll my eyes, looking back at Harper. “Bub, huh?”
She smiles and sticks her arms out, squeezing her hands together. “Bub,” she whines.
I glance behind me. No bubbles.
Damn it.
I reach out and pull her into my arms. She nestles against me and giggles. Then she looks up at me, smacks my face, and says, “Bub.”
Maia and Braden make exaggeratedawnoises, but I look down at Harper. Then I tickle her.
“Bub!” she shrieks again.
And, damn it all, I can’t argue with cuteness like that.
