“Today has been awesome. I know you helped Nick plan it, so thank you.”

He shrugs one shoulder. “It was fun. Helped ease me back into some of the parts of me I lost—things I want to keep. I like having fun, being the one to cause a little bit of trouble, cheer people up—but I started to associate it with drinking. I’m learning it’s okay to let those parts out of me again just without alcohol.”

“That’s good. For the record, I’ve missed the troublemaking side of you—even if it is at my expense.”

He chuckles at that. “You could’ve had alcohol tonight if you wanted to, by the way. I might not be drinking anymore but—”

“Really? Not at all? Not that it’s a bad thing. But—”

He sighs. “All it does is remind me of that night. The smell makes me sick. I don’t want anything to do with it.”

I blink a couple of times. I’m not sure why that answer surprises me. “Wow.”

“I’m not sober or anything, but I haven’t talked about it much, either. I mentioned it to Maia, but that was months ago. And I told—”

“The blind date girl?”

He nods. “Yeah.”

“I’m sorry for how that went down.”

He looks down. “I am too. But she was what I needed at that moment. Who knows what the future is going to bring? Jesus, I sound like a self-help book. She helped me see the better parts of me, ones I still struggle to find sometimes. I’m keeping that piece of it.”

I nod slowly. “Definitely a self-help book.”

“Yeah, not sure I want to keepthatside of me,” he laughs.

“Okay, I talked to Leigh. She called in a favor. Ready to do this?” Nick asks.

Everyone stares at me.

A wave of uncertainty hits me. I don’t want to upset Maia.

“Leigh says Maia will love it, and this guy won’t mess it up.”

Another moment passes with all eyes on me. “All right. Let’s do it.”

Nick claps his hands together. “To the limo, men.”

This is stupid and ridiculous, but I have been wanting to do it. I think it would be nice for the wedding. And hopefully Maia won’t mind.

Scratch that, hopefully she loves it.
