I hang up and toss my phone on the seat, after plugging in the auxiliary cord in case Maia calls back with more information.

Fear and guilt wash over me as I get on the highway. Why did I say those words? What if I never get to take them back? Apologize?

My phone rings, scaring me out of my thoughts. Seeing Trevor’s name, I swipe and quickly put it on speaker. “Trev?”

“You’re awake? Wait, do you already know? It was Braden’s truck?”

“Did you see it?” I ask, not sure I want to know the answer.

“Yeah. I—I was calling to see if you knew, if—”

“What?”

“If he’s…alive.”

Holy fuck. Was it that bad?

“Tell me.”

There’s silence on the other end. Trev’s voice is strangled when he speaks. “Are you sure you want to know?”

Nope. But I need to.

“Just tell me.”

“Fine. It was up on Plemmons Hill Road. That curve just before the fire station, you know how there’s a ton of trees on the one side?”

“Yeah.” I swallow the lump in my throat, trying not to envision it, but it’s all I can see.

“His truck was mangled around one of the biggest ones. But what’s worse… there were no skid marks on the road. I don’t know what happened but—”

“Fuck!” I slam my hand against the steering wheel, trying not to consider the horrible reasons why he wouldn’t have braked.

“You going to the hospital? I heard the helicopter—”

They airlifted him?My heart seizes in my chest. What if he doesn’t survive?

“Yeah, I’m driving there now.”

“All right. I’ll take Hyla home and then come up. I—I’m sorry, Nick.”

I’m the one who should be sorry.

“Thanks, Trev.”

“Bye.”

I hang up and stare down the long stretch of empty highway, willing my car to get there faster. For Braden to be okay. I need him to be okay.
