“No. I trust Vin. It’s not always… easy, but I respect who he is to both of you. Doing that is the only way I’ll maintain a friendship with him and I want that. Just like I want you to be happy.”

Her shoulders soften and her face scrunches. “I thought we said no crying.”

Chuckling, I squeeze her arm. “We’re all good. No tears.”

She nods in determination. “Okay. Moving forward.” She looks at her phone. “We’ve got forty minutes until your PT appointment. How do you feel about milkshakes?”

“I know how you feel about milkshakes, so let’s go.”

“Will you be able to sit comfortably in the chairs there?”

I throw my thumb toward her back seat. “I brought my super awesome butt pillow, no worries.”

She laughs at that as she pulls the door open for me. “That pillow is so sexy. You’re gonna have to beat the girls off with a stick.”

I roll my eyes at that as I lower myself into the car. “Not looking to date right now, but good to know.”

She shuts the door for me, then goes around to the driver’s side. “It’s a shame you aren’t looking for anyone right now. Girls would be falling over themselves.”

I cock an eyebrow. “Oh, really?”

“Duh. Girls love seeing this fragile boy they can heal and take care of. Vulnerable guys are a turn on.”

“Seriously?”

“For some girls,” she says mischievously. “Good thing you didn’t break your penis.”

I turn to stare at her, mouth agape. She’s practically pulling a muscle, trying to keep from laughing. Tears form in the corner of her eyes and she finally loses it, her whole body shaking as she laughs.

Well, fine, two can play at this game.

I put on a serious face. “Erectile dysfunction is actually a common side effect of pelvic fractures.”

She stops at the end of the driveway and looks at me, color draining from her face and eyes wide. “Oh. Shit. Brade—I—”

Now I’m the one holding in my laughter. Shit, that hurts to do.

Mirroring the mischievous smile that just fell off her face, I lean back against the seat and say, “Yeah. Good thing I already tested it out to make sure things work.”

“Jerk!” She smacks my stomach. “Making me think I hurt your feelings. Ugh. And also,ew. Don’t need to know aboutthat.”

I can’t help but laugh again as I lean in and whisper, “Just be glad I wasn’t picturing you while I did it.”

She flares her eyes at me, then raises her fist like she might slug me. “Shut up. Seriously. I will throw you out of my car.”

I lean back against the seat again, snickering.

Fuck, I’ve missed this.

A few minutes later, we pull into the parking lot of Chewie’s, the best local place for a milkshake. As I’m swinging my door open, Nick appears at the side of the car, ready to help me out. Maia grabs my crutches from the back and hands them to me.

“When did you—”

“When I was takingforeverputting in the next appointment info on my phone,” she teases, reminding me how impatient I was with her fiddling with her phone in the office. Then she smiles. “I thought we could have a little fun. Don’t tell your dad.” She winks at me and walks ahead to greet Vince and Leigh, who are standing on the deck, as Nick walks next to me.

“You guys seem to be in a good mood.”

“We are. I mean, weweren’t. But we left all of that at the therapist’s office.”
