“It’s good to see.”

“Yeah. How are things with you and Leigh?”

“Good,” he says with a wicked smile.

“What’s with the super villain look?”

He leans in close and whispers, “Dude, she is crazy horny all the time right now, and I amenjoyingthe benefits.”

I choke on a laugh. “Do not let her hear you say that or she’ll throat punch you.”

“Lucky for me, her being angry at me turns her on.”

He winks at me and walks over to her, giving her a kiss I wish I couldn’t see.

Things I don’t need to know about: my best friends’ sex lives.

Speaking of, Vince squeezes Maia’s ass and I want to gag. Maybe she’s right. Maybe I do need a girl. Someone to contend with all the PDA around me.

In reality, I know I’m not ready for that. But I am happy for my friends. Most surprising is how happy I am for Maia and Vince. The more I see them together, the more I see what a good match they are. It probably helps that I’ve been working on my friendship with Vince, too. It shocked me the first time I looked at them and didn’t feel jealous—didn’t feel like I wanted her. What I want is what they have, but I also know I’m nowhere near ready for it.

It’s strange how different I feel from a few months ago. I guess that’s what almost dying, going to therapy, and actually dealing with tough things does. Still, it’s not some miracle cure. I might be feeling better, but I’m still sort of floating around right now. I don’t know exactly who I am or where I’m going or who I want to be, but I guess that can come in time. For now, I’m trying to take it one day at a time and enjoy not feeling like a heaping pile of trash every second.

Maia slides into the chair next to me and hands me a milkshake. “Cookies and cream. Still your favorite, right?”

“Always. Thanks. What’d you get?”

“Death by chocolate.”

“Right. Of course. Always some form of chocolate.” As Vince, Nick, and Leigh walk toward us, laughing, I lean over and whisper, “So, when are you gonna ask him?”

She flares her eyes at me. “I don’t know. So, shh.”

I can’t help but laugh at that. “What, you want to surprise him?”

“I don’t want to ask him here in front of everyone else.”

I chuckle again as everyone sits down.

“What’s so funny?” Vince asks.

“Nothing,” Maia and I say at the same time, causing him to squint at us, then shake his head.

We chat back and forth as we drink our milkshakes. It’s impossible not to notice Vince scan Maia’s body every few minutes. Then he smiles to himself. He’s ridiculous.

After the fourth time, I lean over and whisper to Maia, “He’s totally checking you out. Oh. Wait. I know. That’s why you’re waiting to tell him. You want to be able to have—”

She elbows me in the side. “Would you chill out?”

I sit straight up, laughing.

I can’t believe I was an idiot for so long—closed off and angry—I missed out on all of this. The laughter. Our friendship. I’m glad to finally have it back now.
