“Not much of a morning person, huh?”
“God, no. Harley is the morning person. I enjoy my sleep.”
I laugh again as Peyton makes a new pot of coffee and pours us each a cup.
“So, Harley does the morning shifts then?”
“Yeah. She loves to bake and be up before everyone else so it works out perfectly. She’s a first-class baker too and everyone loves her pastries. She just got married last weekend to the town sheriff. She’s been in love with him since they were kids and I’m happy that they’re finally together.”
“What about you?” I ask.
“What about me?”
“Are you seeing anyone?”
My breath catches in my throat as I wait for her answer. I can’t bear the thought of her with some other guy.
“Me? No, no, no. I’m way too busy with work to try to meet or date anyone. Maybe once things settle down, I’ll focus on that part of my life.”
My breath comes out in a rush. She’s not admitting her dying love for me right now but at least there isn’t some other guy standing in my way. I’ll just have to stick around a little longer until Peyton finally realizes that she doesn’t need to wait or look for love. That I’m standing right here waiting for her.
