ChapterThree

Harley

I check my hair in the reflection on the window one more time before I head over to where Cooper is sitting. He doesn’t even pick up a menu anymore and I know that he’ll have the chef special no matter what it is. I smile at him as I reach the edge of the table and he looks up at me.

“Evening, Sheriff.” I drawl out in a terrible western accent.

“M’am.” He says back in his own cheesy accent.

I giggle slightly before I put my hand on the table, leaning in.

“How was your day?”

“Slow. Some tourists ran out of gas over on West Ashley Greenway. Mrs. Potts lost her cat again up that tree.” He shrugs as he finishes telling me about his calls.

School is in session now and there aren’t as many tourists this time of year so everything is going to be a little slow.

“What about you? Come up with any new recipes?”

“I’m working on a new soufflé one but I haven’t got it perfect yet.” I say frowning as I think back to how the chocolate soufflé seemed like it was missing something. Peyton had loved it but it just wasn’t quite there yet to me.

“You’ll have to let me try it. Tell you what I think.”

“Do you like chocolate soufflés?” I ask.

“Never had one but I’m sure I’ll like it. I like everything that you do.”

My cheeks heat at that and I look down quickly. I’m so confident in most things in my life but whenever someone compliments my baking, I get all shy.

I open my mouth thinking this is the perfect time to try to flirt with him a little bit. Maybe I’ll ask him out? Before I can open my mouth though, his radio goes off. He scowls down at it before he swipes it off the table and offers me an apologetic smile before he heads out the door.

I watch him leave before I release the disappointed sigh I was holding in. I head back around the counter and into the kitchen, hopping up on one of the counters.

Peyton smirks at me, wiggling her eyebrows, and I laugh at how ridiculous she looks.

“Did he finally ask you out?”

“No, he got a call before we could even really talk that much.” I say and even I can hear the disappointment and longing in my voice.

I watch as Peyton stirs something on the stove and I can feel a piece inside of me just break.

“I can’t take this anymore, Pey. I can’t keep seeing him every day and not being with him. Why hasn’t he asked me out yet?”

“I don’t know, sweetie. Maybe he doesn’t want to rush into anything?”

“Rush into anything?!? I’ve been waiting years for him!”

“I know, I know. Have you thought that maybe you should just ask him out?”

“What if he says no and then things get all awkward between us?” I ask wringing my hands.

“He likes you, Harley. He’s always watching out for you and he smiles more at you than anyone else.”

“Then why doesn’t he make a move?”

“I don’t know.” She says, looking thoughtful.

We’re both silent as Peyton fills some orders and my mind tries to come up with something to do, some way to make Cooper realize that we’re meant to be and it’s time to stop with all of the waiting and the games.
