Ignoring her, he did an easy backstroke until he hit the edge of the infinity pool. Lowering his legs, he swiveled around to take in the stunning view.

Admittedly, he seemed to be handling this whole situation much better than she was. And he was the one with the most upheaval in his life.

So, maybe, get over yourself?

Well, she wasn’t tired anymore, and that water sure looked appealing. Martin had said she could buy a few things and charge them to the room. “Hey—” But she stopped herself from telling him where she was going. He needed time on his own, so she’d leave him be.

Grabbing her purse off the floor, she headed for the door.

She glanced back to see his arms spread out along the rim of the pool, hair slicked back, droplets of water on his broad shoulders, gazing out to the turquoise ocean.

This is going to be the hardest couple of days in my life, being so close and yet not being able to touch him or talk to him the way we did on the bus.

She hoped like hell someone else canceled, so she could have her own room.

“Finally,” Micky said. “I was freaking out. All my calls went right to voicemail.”

In her new swimsuit, Della lay on a chaise lounge by the pool. Lush landscaping, private little huts, and the gentle rush of a waterfall made for the most relaxing environment she’d ever experienced. “Sorry. I’m in the Maldives and only just now got a travel pass for my phone.”

“The Maldives. What is your life right now?”

“I know, right? It’s unreal.”

“Are you alone?”

“Right this minute, yes. But…I’m sharing a room with Van.”

Just as Micky started to shriek, Della cut her off. “But only because the resort is sold out.”

“Uh huh. That’s totally normal. Happens all the time. Spill it, girl. I might be a million miles away and can’t see your face, but I know you. What’s going on with you and the rock god?”

She wanted to spill the whole story so badly. “There’s so much I want to tell you but because of the NDA, I can’t.”

“But you can tell me how you feel, so let’s start with that.”

“Oh, my God, Micky. I’m wearing a three-hundred-dollar swimsuit, sunbathing on a private island…I should be in heaven.”

“But?”

“But I fell for somebody I can’t have.”

“Oh, honey. He’s so much better than what you’d imagined?”

“So much.”

“And you can’t have him because you work for him?”

Something else she couldn’t explain. “Because he’s not in the right place.”

“I hate to say this, but that’s a textbook response from guys who don’t want to commit.”

“In this case, it’s true.”

“Because of things.”

“Exactly.” The waiter approached, pointing to her empty cocktail glass. Della shook her head.

“Okay, there’s only one solution, and I think you already know it.”
