They grin.

“You’re not gonna be rude. And there’s no lines to cross. Speak your mind, luv,” Gus chuckles.

I take a breath.

Here goes nothing.

“You’ve both told me in roundabout ways about what you used to do for work.”

The smiles fade. They glance at each other, shuffling. Jack clears his throat.

“Look, Ella—”

“I’m not looking to pry. And, believe me, I don’t think anyone’s past should determine their present or future. But I need your help with something.”

They both look to each other again, looking worried and a little grim.

“What’s this about, Ella?” Gus ventures quietly.

I swallow, leaning closer.

“Do either of you know how to get in touch with Adrian Cross?”

The both of them freeze. Jack’s face pales a little, and Gus nervously glances at the door before turning his gaze back to me. He leans even closer, hissing under his breath.

“Are you out of your ever-loving mind?”

“No, but I need to talk to him.”

“The hell you do,” Jack spits. “No goddamn way we’re putting you in touch with that bloke.”

“I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’treallyimportant.”

They both frown, the walls going up.

Screw it. I grab my phone out of my pocket and open it to the picture of the picture.

“There,” I jab a finger at my dad.

“That’s my father. That’s Noel Ransom.”

They both frown curiously.

“That’s Oliver Prince, and Braddock McCreed—”

“The billionaire?”

“Yes.”

I keep tapping at faces.

“These two I don’t really know, he’s not important,” I slip my pointer past Kristoff’s face until it lands on Adrian.

“But I know you know who this is.”

They’re both quiet. Gus swallows, slowly looking up at me.

“What in the seven hells was your father doing getting a pint with Adrian Cross?”
