“They were friends.”

Jack swears under his breath.

“It’simportant, guys,” I hiss quietly. “Please. All I need is to talk to him for five minutes.”

Gus’s face sours as he glances at his friend. Jack sighs slowly, nodding.

“Right, there’s a pub here in East London that he’s usually at. I don’tknowhe’s there, but…”

“I’ll take those odds. What’s the pub?”

Jack strokes his chin.

“Called the Ten Bells.”

My brow arches.

“Isn’t that—”

“Famous for being where Jack the bloody Ripper found his victims? Sure is,” Gus mumbles.

“Okay…” I take a breath. “Thank you, guys—”

“You off there now?”

I nod.

Jack scowls. “Not alone, you’re not.”

“Jack, I can handle—”

“Yeah, well, we’re coming with you.”

I chew on my lip, nodding slowly.

“Okay, okay. But… we need to slip out the back.”

Jack takes a huge gulp of his beer and then smirks.

“Let the cloak and dagger shit begin, ay, Gus?”

Twenty minutes later,I’m approaching a huge bouncer in a black suit standing outside a low-lit pub. He shakes his head as I come to a stop in front of him.

“Sorry, miss. At capacity this evening.”

I raise a brow, glancing past him through the windows into an almost empty pub.

“Uh—”

“Oi, Vince? Is that you, lad?”

Gus grins as he pushes past me, shaking a finger at the huge guard. The guy frowns, but then suddenly breaks out into a huge grin.

“Wellfuck me,” he chuckles. “Gus Pepperidge! No bloody way you’re still kicking around!”

“Ay, and making a stink about it,” Jack grunts, stepping past me.

The bouncer grins again.
