“No, I don’t think he would have. He knew you, Ransom. Better than any of us. It’s why he asked you to watch over his family, not any of us.”

“Well, that and he knew you’d been drooling over his fucking wife for years, you creep.”

Oliver chuckles, shaking his head as he takes a drink.

“If Thomas were alive today, to see you and Ella together?” He raises his eyes to mine. “I think he’d be proud of her for picking someone as strong, dedicated, and loyal as you, actually.”

“I appreciate that,” I growl quietly.

Oliver nods, looking away.

“I did love her, you know.” He glances back at me. “Cassandra, I mean.”

“I know.”

“And I felt like shit about it every single fucking day. Because Thomas was like a brother to us, and there I was harboring feelings for the woman of his dreams.”

He shakes his head.

“I couldn’t get rid of that, Noel. And I tried.”

“We don’t always get to pick who we love, Prince,” I grunt.

“Amen to that,” he sighs, raising his glass.

“To Cassandra.”

“To Cassandra.”

My phone dings, and I frown.

“Sorry, hang on.”

I pull it out of my pocket to silence it. But my brow furrows when I see Liam’s number.

“I actually need to take this, if you’ll excuse me for a minute.”

“Of course.”

I smirk at him.

“I’ve missed this, you know. Our back and forth bullshit.”

He chuckles. “I have, too.”

I stand and head to the doors to my office, opening them to step into the hallway before I answer.

“Liam, talk to me—”

“It’s not Karzony.”

The words hit me like a punch to the chest. I stiffen, my jaw clenching as gnawing feeling surges inside of me.

“What?”

“Lewis got me in the room with the police while they were questioning Karzony with a keyboard,” he growls. “I’m sorry, but it’s not him, boss. The man doesn’t knowshitabout the fires that killed Cassandra and Matilde. They’d frame made-up bullshit as a leading question, and he’d fall right into it, tripping over himself to confirm the bullshit as facts.”

My pulse slows, my gut dropping.
