I nod.

“Take off, Liam. I’m right behind you, I just need to make a call.”

He nods. He knows who I’m calling.

“See you back at the house, boss.”

I watch his taillights fade into the foggy night before I hit Adrian’s number.

“And to what do I owe this rare pleasure?”

I smile at the rumbling, whiskey tone of my old friend’s voice. As Thomas loved to say, in each of us, there is both king and villain.

Adrian Cross really leaned into the “villain” part.

But then, he was destined to take over the Cross crime family from his uncle. Having an MBA from Lords College like the rest of us doesn’t exactly hurt business.

“Been a long time, Adrian.”

“It has.”

We’re both quiet for a few seconds.

“I’ve been watching the news…”

“Notwhy I’m calling,” I growl.

“What can I do for you this fine evening then, old friend.”

I glance across the dark, dreary street to the five men laying in various shades of consciousness on the floor.

“Do you do any business with Leo Argyros? He’s a small-time, East London—”

“I know who he is,” Adrian grunts with disdain. “And fuck no.”

“Good.”

He chuckles.

“Dare I ask why?”

“Because I just put him in a wheelchair.”

“Good,” Adrian mutters thinly. “The man is a stain.”

“I was also hoping to ask a favor.”

“If it entails making sure Leo understands the consequences of reprisal, consider it done. No favor needed.”

I nod. “Thank you.”

“Any time.”

He sighs.

“We should talk, you know.”

“I’m not interested in being lectured on my arrangement with—”
