I smile at him, biting my lip.

“You’re taking very good care of me.”

Something darkens his brow as he frowns, glancing away.

“I mean that as a compliment, you know.”

He nods. “I know. It’s just that taking good care of you is something I should’ve been doing for much, much longer than I have.”

He frowns as he turns his piercing gaze back to my eyes.

“I was…ill-fitto be what you needed back then,” he murmurs.

“A father figure?”

His nose wrinkles. So does mine. I make a face.

“Okay, how about I never refer to you that way again?”

“Please don’t,” he groans.

I giggle, reaching over and squeezing his hand with mine.

“I’m not…” he frowns. “I’m not sure I’m built that way, truth be told.”

“Which way?”

His eyes lock with mine, searching for something as his jaw tightens.

“Fatherhood.”

I exhale like I’ve been holding my breath.

“Well thank God, because Ido notwant kids.”

I freeze as soon as the words leave my lips. I swallow, heat rising in my cheeks as I turn slowly. Our eyes lock before I drag mine away kicking and screaming.

“I—I didn’t mean for that to insinuate—”

“You can insinuate all you want with me, Ella,” he growls quietly.

“No, I just mean… ugh.”

I roll my eyes, losing the words I’m trying to say.

“Just forget it.”

“I’d rather not.”

I swallow as he eyes me heatedly.

“I like there being anus,” he grunts.

My face tingles.

“Me too.”

He smiles wryly, turning to me. I take a sip of the luxurious wine and then blow air through my lips.
