“I just don’t want to be a mother. I’m… I don’t know. I’m not built that way either, I guess. A cool aunt, maybe? Except I’m an only child.”

“Oh, not your dear stepsisters?”

I scowl as he grins at me.

“Uh,no.”

Noel smiles looking away.

“They’re not as bad as you…” he frowns. “Okay, Cora is exactly as bad as you think she is.”

“You do know she was the one who tricked me into eating that pot brownie, right?”

His face is grim.

“I do. I didn’t, at first. I believed…” he shakes his head.

“That I stole it from her room.”

He nods. “I’m sorry.”

“I forgive you.”

He turns back, a wry smile on his chiseled jaw.

“I don’t know if I deserve your forgiveness, little one.”

“Do I deserve yours?”

“Yes.”

I shrug. “Well, it’s all or nothing, I’m afraid.”

Noel grins, lifting my hand in his to his lips and kissing the back of it.

“Cora’s friend—Padma Devi. She spilled it to me tearfully when you were all sixteen. I had every intention of pulling Cora out of that fancy private school she was at and teaching her a lesson. But she invoked an emancipated minor clause in her trust.”

I shrug.

“Eh, I forgive her, too.”

His brow knits.

“Really?”

“No.”

Noel chuckles darkly.

“Naomi isn’t as bad as you think she is. She’s prickly, and she’s… vain. Hurt; I don’t know.”

He sighs heavily.

“Further proof I should have no say or input in raising children.”

“Seriously. I don’t think you ever once even gave me a birthday present.”

He chuckles.
