“Liar.” Mila was terrible at being quiet. But the temptation was too much. I gripped her hips, helping her to ride me. The girls outside continued to talk, and Mila continued to fuck herself on my cock. She pressed her forehead against mine as she moaned and trembled around me. I closed my eyes, pulling her through her release as my own orgasm shook through me. I wasn’t sure how quiet either of us had been.

“Did you hear that?” one of the girls asked the other. My breathing slowed.

There was a beat of silence before her companion responded. “Uh, no. I think you’re losing it from being in this motel for so long.”

The first girl laughed, but it was cold. “You aren’t wrong there.”

Mila and I sat, still joined, her forehead still pressed to mine, as we waited for the girls to finally stop talking. The footsteps faded away, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

“We should get you back to your room.”

“Too close of a call for you, Brother Prospero?”

Mila teased, but she was lifting off me, feeling around in the darkness for her clothing.

“Shut up.” I got to my feet, zipping my pants back up and pulling my mask into place. I opened the door a crack, and light flooded into the small closet. Mila was fully dressed, so I peeked outside into the hall. “We’re good. Come on.”

I pulled her hand behind me as we tiptoed into her room. The moment her bedroom door closed behind us, she met my eyes and smirked. “I figured we wouldn’t have to sneak around anymore once we were out of university.”

I couldn’t help the smile spreading across my face, or the laugh following it. She joined in, her smirk growing into a wide smile. This was what it had been like before with Mila. Easy. Happy. This was what was missing from my life.

I wasn’t supposed to be on watch today, so I had time to sit with Mila in her bed and just talk. About where she’d been, and how she’d survived. About Ella, and my mother. About the Kingsnakes, and the forest. The only thing we didn’t talk about was that day, the last day we’d spent together. The one where she never returned.

I wanted to know what made her run, but I didn’t want to push, and she didn’t offer. So we talked, the same way we always had. She curled into my side, whispering all the secrets that she kept locked inside. We caught up, until Mila’s eyelids drifted closed, and I rested her down on the thin, yellowed pillow.

I watched Mila sleep, the same way she always had. Curled up to one side, tucking her knees into her chest, making herself as small as possible. Usually I would wrap my body behind hers, covering her weak side.

Always the protector, even when I didn’t want to be.

But protecting the girls wasn’t what we did here. Here, the protector became the villain. Funny how the end of the world changed everything in a heartbeat.

I stroked her dark hair away from her face, her freckled skin illuminated by the moonlight streaming in through the half-boarded-up window. “Why’d you leave, babydoll?” I whispered, knowing she was asleep and wouldn’t hear me.

It didn’t matter anyways. She had her reasons for why she left, and I had to trust they were more than her not wanting to marry me.

Because when we were together in the same room, the chemistry was still there. The electricity of a soul meeting its counterpart. My heart was being squeezed by a vice, and I could barely choke out the words that broke me. “Shit, Mila. Why’d you have to fucking leave?”

The only answer I got was a quiet sigh, Mila settling into a deeper slumber. I shook my head. I was foolish to think vocalizing my thoughts would bring me any closure.

Not right now at least. I pressed a kiss to her forehead, struggling to get off the shaky bed without waking her up, but Mila was out cold. I pulled the blanket up, tucking her in. Pausing in her doorway, I drank her in one more time, before heading back downstairs to deal with Brother Tybalt.Asshole.

Except by the time I made it downstairs and turned the corner, Tybalt wasn’t alone.

Luke stood with him, and a few other Kingsnakes. He looked up, surprised to see me. “Brother Prospero. It isn’t your night. What are you doing here?”

“I… uh...” My excuse had worked well with the brother on door duty, but I wasn’t sure it would work as well with Luke. Somehow, he had a way of seeing right through me.

Maybe this was where I got caught, before I even had a chance to see where I stood with Mila. Maybe this was my end. My lie stood on the tip of my tongue, ready to watch my downfall.

Luke shook his head. “Who am I kidding? You probably heard the rumors before I did. You seem to have sources everywhere. Besides, we can use all the extra hands tonight. Get back upstairs and grab as many girls as you can.”

“Not a problem, brother.” I had no idea why I was grabbing girls, but I couldn’t ask without revealing I had no idea what the rumor was.

“Fucking cops have left us alone for months. I pay my dues. I don’t touch their families,” Luke muttered, trailing behind me up the stairs. “I really don’t need a fucking raid tonight.”

A raid. The police were coming to raid the Kingsnakes. I had left my baby sisters at home, and the love of my life in a locked motel room directly in harm’s way. Luke had said it best.

I really didn’t need a raid tonight.
