“Hey,” I squeeze her hand gently and pull her closer.

She stands by the bed, her hand flapping over my chest as she traces the wires connecting me to various machines, and I pull again. “In. Now.”

“What?” Her eyes widen in alarm. “Ben, no. I can’t. Did you miss the part where I said you have broken ribs and a broken leg? I can’t just climb in with you.”

“Yes.” I push myself over slightly and suck in a breath. I will not let her see the pain if it means I can’t hold her. “You can. Now get over here or I’m not going to sleep and then you’ll tell me off because I need to rest and we’ll just go in circles all night.”

I tug her arm again and she sighs before kicking off her shoes and crawling in beside me. She moves gently, careful not to jostle me or tug on the blankets. She doesn’t wrap around me or nuzzle in like I want her to. Instead she lies on her side, inches away from me, and she watches me closely.

“Hey, Mik?” I turn my face to her and try not to grin as she sighs.

“Yes, Ben?”

“I love you too.”

Her blush is beautifully refreshing as I pull our hands to my lips and press soft kisses against her knuckles.

“You heard that then?”

“Yep.” I close my eyes and let the haziness come for me again. “And there’s no need to fix anything. Now I think we should sleep.”

“Okay,” she whispers and I feel her shift closer before pressing her lips against mine for a second. “Goodnight, Ben.”

I hum as she settles beside me and darkness washes over me with a comforting warmth.
