“What happened to Matty, Mik? You used to call me Matty.”

“What did you do, Matthew?” My legs are shaking as I get to my feet and, for a second, I think I might pass out or collapse or puke.

I think I might do all three.

He watches Ben so closely that my skin prickles.

“I saw you two. In that restaurant.” His voice is eerily quiet as he steps forwards.

I stumble back, my hip crashing against the bedside table as I grasp for the lamp that almost falls.

Matthew tilts his head to the side. “For months I told myself you didn’t want me to find you. But then I realised you went back to Jamie. Why would you go somewhere I knew if you didn’t want me to find you? You wouldn’t. So I came to find you, Mik. And I watched you.”

“Matthew.”

“I watched you with some other guy and I watched that guy too. And I waited. You weren’twithhim so I thought I’d give you time, Mikaela. You wanted time, right?”

“Matthew.”

“And then one dayhewas with you.” His jaw twitches as he stares at Ben. “And I watched you fuck about with him, Mik. I watched you in the garden at that party. How you let him touch you…” He looks back to me and his cheeks are wet. “And I saw you in that restaurant. And you wore purple. The exact same shade we painted our bedroom. Remember that?”

“Matty.” The name burns my throat as I say it. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t mean to do it.” His voice is cool and controlled, and I take a shaking step towards him. “I didn’t mean to hit his car. I just kept thinking about the way he handled you, Mik. He keeps putting his hands on you and you’re not his to touch like that. You’re mine.”

Hot tears roll down my cheeks as I shake my head.

“You need to leave.” It’s just a whisper but I see the way it ignites that spark of fury that’s never too far beneath the surface.

He lurches forwards and a small cry escapes my lips as his hands wrap tightly around my arms.

Jamie

“What do you mean you don’t know where he is?” An officer is walking down the hall towards me, peering in to every room as his partner stands over the nurses computer, glaring at the screen. “He should never have been left alone.”

“With all due respect, sir, we’re short staffed and we’re nurses. If you wanted him monitored, you should have left an officer posted,” the nurse bites.

I smirk. She’s feisty.

“Yes, we should have,” the officer snaps back.

And then a familiar voice cuts me in half. “You’re not his to touch like that. You’re mine.”

I drop the coffees where I stand.

I need to move. Why can’t I move?

“Who are you looking for?” My voice is shaking.

The officer glances my way.

“What?”

“Who are you looking for?” I turn to Ben’s room. Just three doors down from where I’m standing. And I run.

Mikaela

“Get your fucking hands off of my sister before you lose them.Now.”
