The traitor.

Bringing those old feelings back to the surface, even though I’ve pushed them down for as long as I can remember.

And partly because of the text that came through two days later.

I’ve read it at least fifty times, but now I’m doing my best to ignore it and pretend it isn’t there.

It’s entirely inappropriate, and he’s a dick for sending it.

A dick that makes my thighs clench together.

My finger hovers over the message with his unsaved number, as I decide whether or not to read it again. I press the message and my eyes scan it once more.

I might be number five on your scorecard, but if you give me one night, I’ll give you ten reasons why I should be number one, and I don’t even need to use my cock.

The word ‘cock’ coming from Graham Adam’s lips seems even more dirty when I try to imagine it. Which I am, imagining it now that it’s on my phone.

See? Wholly inappropriate.

What was he thinking?!

“Emery?”

A deep voice startles me, causing my phone to fly from my hand and bounce against my computer screen before falling with a loud thump against my desk.

“Yes, I’m s-sorry,” I stutter, standing quickly and straightening my blouse before turning around to face him.

It’s Brandon, the junior partner from the fourth floor. I’ve only met him twice since, most of the time, I do my best to stay out of senior partner’s way and keep to my cubicle unless needed. He’s wearing a dark navy suit, paired with a red tie. He’s probably about ten years older than me, and has dark, chestnut brown hair. He’s an attractive guy, but that’s not what makes me nervous. It’s the fact that in this case? He’s practically my boss.

He laughs and extends his hand. “Hi.”

I slide my palm in his and plaster on a bright smile. “Hi. Sorry, I was checking some emails on my phone.”

“No problem. I just wanted to come down and say congratulations on being chosen for the Monterrey case. I’m happy that we’ll be working together.”

“Me too. Honestly? I can’t believe it, but I’m excited, and I’m going to work really hard.”

I’m rambling because I’m nervous.Get it together, Emery. This is nothing. You are a strong, independent, badass bitch.

“Great, well, if you’re free this afternoon, I can sit with you and go over what we have?”

I nod. “That would be great. Thank you.”

He smiles warmly then nods, and then turns on his heel and is gone. I quickly pick up my phone and send a text back to the girls.

Going to need that drink sooner rather than later. Tonight? 7 @ Lush Library.

Placing my phone back in my desk drawer, I open my web browser then get a new notebook and begin reading anything and everything I can about Zack Monterrey.

All while trying not to think about the text on my phone or about anything that deals with Graham Adams at all.

The rest of the day passes in a blur of meetings and so much information that my head spins. I don’t make it to Lush Library until after seven thirty, and when I walk through the door, I spot Lea, Ana and Holland at a table in the far back corner, drinks already in front of them.

My heels click against the concrete as I walk to the booth, then flop into the seat next to Holland. Lea and Ana are both sipping their drinks when I sit down.

“Longest day ever.Needmargaritas,” I mutter, rubbing my temples with my fingers to ease the headache that formed hours ago.

Holland laughs and pushes the strawberry margarita, my favorite, across the table toward me.
