“Would pretending that I didn’t make you feel better?”

She groans, dropping her head into her hands and covering her face. “This is too much. You’re doing too much.”

“Remember when you said that we had to make this believable? Well, no one would believe that I bought you a ring that wasn’t worthy of you, Emery Davidson. They wouldn’t believe it for a second that I didn’t buy you a ring I would want to stare at every day and show off that you’re mine.

Her throat bobs as she swallows then looks around once more at the glass cases, and finally nods. “Okay. Okay, fine. This is fine.”

I almost laugh at the fact that she’s trying to reassure herself because it is fine, and she’s not walking out of this building without a ring that I’m proud to have on her finger.

No fucking way.

“Pick one. Whatever you want.”

“Graham… I can’t just pick out a ring. They’re all too expensive.”

“Emery, pick out a ring.”

I nod at Barry, who walks over and smiles at Emery. “I’ve picked out some of our most beautiful diamonds for you. What cut do you prefer?”

“If it’s okay, could I just look around for a while?”

“Of course, take your time, and I’ll be here if you see anything that interests you,” Barry says, stepping back and sweeping his arm out to the room.

She looks hesitant at first, but finally walks over to the rings that he’s set on the counter and lifts a shaky hand to pick up one of the diamond rings. Her other hand is on her stomach, a habit she’s picked up in the last few weeks, and one I can’t get enough of.

She admires the ring in her hand, and it’s almost like she gravitated directly to it. She rubs her thumb across the top and spins it delicately in her finger, before gently sliding it on her ring finger and inspecting it. I can tell how much she loves it just by the way she’s staring at it, with such adoration in her eyes.

Then, her head shakes, and she pulls it off, placing it back on the display.

“Is this it?” I ask, walking over and nodding toward the ring she just put back.”

“It’s beautiful, but it’s huge, Graham.”

“Barry, can you tell me about this one?” I ask.

He nods, stepping behind the counter. “This is ourThe One Oval-Shaped Diamond Micro-pavé engagement ring. Each diamond is handpicked and unlike any other. As Mr. Winston has always said, “No two diamonds are the same.” The center stone starts at 1 carat, but I believe this one is two carats set in aMicro-pavéband.”

“How much is it?” Emery asks, glancing down at the ring again.

“This one starts at One Hundred Thousand dollars.”

Her face goes slack, and I swear she goes as pale as the white ring setting in front of her. She shakes her head. “Absolutely not. Thank you but no.”

Before I can even speak, she’s walking away. Fleeing.

"Em, stop.”

She shakes her head. “No, this is crazy. You can’t spend One Hundred Thousand dollars on a ring, Graham! God, this is insane. We’re insane. We’re not even really engaged, and that is literally how much a house costs. No.” By the time she’s finished speaking, her cheeks are flushed, and she’s so fucking adorable when she’s mad.

So. Fucking. Adorable.

“Don’t over think this, Davidson. I told you whatever you wanted, it’s yours. Do it for me. Please?”

"I can’t, Graham. I literally cannot. Please, please, let’s just look at something cheaper.”

I can see the panic in her eyes, and it’s the only reason I relent.

“Fine, if that’s what you want. I told you I want you to pick out whatever you like.” Turning to Barry I say, “Can you show us some that are a little cheaper?”
