“I knew he’d help me,” Jack said to his mom, then blurted to Wesley, “Mom didn’t want to come and ask you for a favor, but I figured if you were friends, you’d help.”

“Jack, cool it.” Looking mortified, she pressed her lips together.

Seemed taking a handout set her hair on fire.

“Friends help friends.” He grinned at her, knowing how hard this was for her, but he felt elated to assist them—even a bit flattered she’d come all this way to seek him out.

Jack glanced at his mother. “My mom’s made a big impression on me too—being a cool helicopter pilot and all. But we weren’t allowed to write about a family member.”

Ava ruffled his hair as a genuine smile brightened her face.

“This is Regina, my publicist.”

Chin-length black hair streaked with indigo and catlike eyeglass frames signified this girl liked to stand out.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.” Regina clutched her tablet to her chest, freeing up her hand to shake Ava’s, and then Jack’s.

“When is your paper due for school? Regina can set up a time for us to meet,” he offered.

“Give me one sec.” Regina tapped away on the tablet, chewing on her lip. “After today, Wes won’t be back in New York for two weeks.”

Ava held up a hand. “Jack will be done with school before then.” Sounding apologetic, she added, “I should have called first… I wasn’t thinking.”

“It’s fine. I can delay my return to Oldport and do it now.”

“Oh, you’ve already moved out there?”

“Yeah. And my whole team came with me. It’s awesome.” He beamed, thinking about how they transformed the house into a rad setup.

“Except for me.” Regina pouted, giving Ava puppy-dog eyes.

“Yeah, she’s too busy. Always on the go.” His publicist spent a great deal of time getting his brand out there, so people scrolling through social media would see it. “But she’s coming out next week for a meeting.”

“Thanks, Wes. It’s only a few questions.” Ava turned toward Jack. “He’s got the questions on his phone.”

“Absolutely. I’m happy to help a friend.” He glanced around the room. “Let’s use this room and bang those questions out.”

Ava

Jack seemed thrilled that Ava appeared cool in Wesley’s eyes.

It wasn’t lost on Ava how Jack noticed the other kids looking envious when Wesley had singled them out. The Stan Lee of video gaming, Wesley was emerging as the next big sensation.

After answering all Jack’s questions, Wesley asked him, “How would you like someDragon Rockmerch?”

Jack sat forward. “I love merch!”

“Regina, would you mind taking him to the prep room? Let him pick out whatever he wants.”

“You don’t have to do that,” Ava injected, already feeling indebted to Wesley.

“I promise,” Regina waved Jack over, “I’ll bring him right back.”

Wesley shooed them from the room while Ava reluctantly nodded. How could she say no to Jack?

“Cute kid.”

“Thanks.” She crossed her arms, feeling overdressed for a video game event. “And thanks for…all this, the interview and merchandise.”
