“You can have some, too, if you’d like.”

“I’ve already got enough,” she said with just enough snark to make him grin. And she wasn’t talking about the T-shirt he’d given her that was still shoved into her backpack.

“Oh?”

“You know what I’m talking about.”

He stretched his long legs out, leaning back and staring her down.

“The tattoo,” she finally muttered.

He sprang from his chair. “I’ve got to see it again.” He circled her.

She let him, keeping her eyelids lowered.

They were alone in the dimly lit little room, cocooned in the windowless interior space. Tension hung in the air, thick and electrified, as his circling ramped up the undulating current between them.

He swept the hair off her neck, brushing it over her shoulder and exposing his custom symbol. “I’ve seen few things more beautiful than this,” he whispered huskily into her ear as his fingers brushed her skin and drew the fabric of her dress lower.

“Wes.” She sighed, lost for a moment, and allowing the feeling of flutters and shudders to permeate her body at the mere sound of his deep voice and arresting declaration. This dance they engaged in could be dangerous.

He circled again, stopping inches from her. “I can’t stop thinking about you.”

She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze. “Why?”

The frank question seemed to throw him off. A mask slipped over his eyes, hooding his true feelings as he conjured an answer. “You’re inspiring to be around.”

“Funny,” she smirked, “most people think I’m a pain in the ass to be around. Just ask my mother. Or Todd.”

“I don’t believe it.”

Ava stepped away from him, snorting a laugh.

“Okay, I can see it sometimes,” he admitted, earning her approval at the truth.

The last thing she wanted was to be placated or schmoozed.

“But I like you anyway.”

His glance was so tender and steamy all at the same time, it made her knees week.

Well, fuck. She stared at him, afraid to admit she liked him too.

Wesley had a big-time life that she had no business thinking she could fit into. She’d committed to stepping up and raising Jack. Though Wesley made his intent clear, she had to set the record straight.

“Look, Wes, I know we shared a kiss but I’m not ready to get tangled up in anything right now. I have Jack to think about.”

“Hey.” He came closer, filling her nostrils with his citrusy scent—the one she wished she could bottle. “I completely understand.”

Did he? A single guy riding the wave of his successful video game?

“Did Jack see the tattoo?”

She nodded, trying not to grin. “He thinks I’m cool.”

“You are cool. That’s why I want you on my team. Seriously, Ava, what did you think of the contract?”

“It’s very generous.”
