“Right.”

He looked off into the distance as if mulling over the situation, his eyes going soft and shifting to…sadness? Darn, this pulled at her heartstrings, making her feel guilty for her harsh reprimand.

“Sorry if I overstepped.”

“No. It’s okay.” She rushed to amend her verbal attack, though her head and heart took opposite stands in this internal battle. “There’s no sense worrying whether or not we can take Goliath with us to our next home until there’s even a next home to consider.” She bent to study the white, tan, and gray scales and the long claws clinging to the rock inside the terrarium. “He is kinda cute.”

Jack returned with a piece of lettuce, grinning from ear to ear. She couldn’t help but smile at his happiness as they watched Goliath consume the vegetable.

Wesley wandered farther into the room and looked out a window. “Ava, come check it out.”

She crossed to his side, glancing at the non-ocean view, not sure what to expect. Blinking her eyes in surprise, her breath caught. What a beauty!

“Is…is that mine? I mean, our helicopter. The one you want me to pilot?”

“The very one,” he announced with a twinkle in his eye.

“But how is it here? And Brock just happened to have a helipad? Man, it must be grand to be so rich.” Ava hadn’t noticed this section of the property from the first floor or ground levels when she stayed here a few weeks ago. And this vantage point couldn’t be seen from her bedroom windows.

“No. It’s not a helipad but an old tennis court that went out of use a few decades ago. It’s perfect to serve as our temporary landing place. I hope the neighbors don’t mind.”

Jack wormed his way in front of them, getting a clear view of the helicopter. “Whoa, it looks like a dragon.”

“Yeah.” Ava’s words were caught between a whisper and a sigh. “That’s some custom paint job.”

“Rush job.” Wesley nodded. “It got flown in last night.”

She bounced on her toes, excitement whirling through her. “I’ve got to see it up close!”

Wesley

Wesley had successfully won Ava over with the revealing of the helicopter after his overstepping pet debacle. The adoring gaze that came over her face when first seeing theDragon Rockdragon-inspired paint job had him filled with pride. She had been pleased—beyond pleased—with both the expensive bird and with him. He felt it in the way she looked at him after climbing into the pilot seat.

“This is incredible.”

He’d never seen her smile so wide.

“Truly, Wes, I can’t believe I get to fly it.”

Two days later, he had a meeting in New York, and they got to fly together. Of course, Ava had taken it before that for a test ride and to refuel it at the local airstrip.

As they glided toward the city, he asked through the headset, “You and Jack settle in all right?”

“Affirmative.”

He grinned. “And you’re comfortable with the guys?”

“The team?” She glanced at him. “Yeah, they’re great. And they’re great with Jack.”

“They love the game, the brand. They’re super dedicated.”

“I’ve heard them up at all hours of the day and night. Don’t they ever sleep? Do they even get the weekends off?”

Wesley chuckled, knowing the addictive feelings they had. He still had it. To build and create spoke to one’s soul. Though technical, they were each artists in their own way. “The weekends are their own. Sorry if they’re too rowdy.”

“You know I’ve been in the army, right? It feels like home.”

Like home?He couldn’t ask for more. Her happiness pleased him beyond measure. She looked badass and oh so sexy maneuvering this huge machine they sat inside of. He rummaged through his mind for a way to unpack the sensations crowding his chest, making it difficult to breathe normally around her.
