“Earth to Wesley Scott! Do you receive me?”

“Huh?” He’d focused his gaze on the horizon and the skyscrapers growing larger as they approached, but his thoughts were still tangled around her. “Oh, sorry. What did you ask me?”

“What else do you need me to do when we’re not traveling?”

“I gave you the schedule.”

“You did, but I’m not flying every day. It’s more like once or twice a week.”

“You’re on standby when not on the schedule. Never know when an emergency might arise, and the board members want to meet.” He wanted to laugh at her disappointed pout, knowing she wanted more airtime. He offered some suggestions for her time. “Keep the chopper fueled, shiny, and running in top shape. Swim in the pool with Jack. Hang out with the team. They’re often taking screen breaks—which is healthy, and I recommend it. Remember, you’re one of us now.”

He quieted as she spoke via radio to whoever cleared her to land on top of the Manhattan building.

“Shouldn’t be more than an hour. Will you stay here?”

“Yes. Permission to rest was granted. See you in approximately sixty minutes.”

He’d been in this mode of transportation several times, so he knew some of the protocol. In his haste in trying to hire her, he realized, when she’d set the bird down with control and ease, that he’d never gone for a test ride with her. What if she’d been an awful pilot?Luckily for him, she fulfilled his expectations in this as well as so many more ways. He couldn’t resist a glance back at her seated in the brightly colored gold and turquoise dragon-copter before he disappeared into the building.

Later, on their return trip to Oldport, thick clouds rolled in as a massive rain system headed their way. He wondered how she would handle this heavy machine in a rainstorm. They arrived at Bluff House before he had a chance to find out.
