Chapter Fifteen

-Dante -

ICROSSED MY LEG ANDwaited patiently as the key turned in the lock and the door swung open. He left the light off as he walked into the room, crossing to a side table near the entryway where he laid down his laptop bag. He loosened his tie as he approached the bar.

The pop of a stopper being removed.

The clink of glass.

The gurgle of liquid being poured.

He needed a drink at the end of the day.

“You might need to make it a double.”

One corner of my mouth ticked upward when he didn’t jump at my warning.

“I was wondering how long you were going to sit in the dark before you said something.”

He knew I was there. He was more perceptive than I’d given him credit for.

“How the hell did you get in here?” he bit out as he leaned against the bar and snapped on a small light.

The room was barely lit. My corner remained dark, but I could see him as he leaned against the sleek black lacquer.

“No reason to be alarmed. It wasn’t easy, actually.”

“It should have been impossible.”

“You’re right,” I agreed. “If you’d like, when we’re done with our discussion, I’ll let you know how I was able to break your system.”

“Wonderful,” he drawled, tossing back the last of his drink.

He filled a shot glass with the amber liquid in the decanter and extended it to me. I never drank while I’m working so I shook my head. He set it on the counter and turned determined eyes back to me.

I ignored the expectant look on his face. “That was a dick thing to do.”

“You broke into my home to call me names? What you think might matter if I knew what the hell you were talking about.”

“Where do you want to start? I have a list of dick things you’ve done the last two weeks.”

“A list? I can think of one thing that probably didn’t make you happy and I don’t give a shit. I did what I had to do, and I’d do it again. But I’m assuming it’s too late.”

“Why do you say that?” I liked that he was at least taking responsibility for his actions.

“You’re standing here, aren’t you? And she’s back home? Mission accomplished.”

“She’s home. Safe and sound.”

“I doubt that.”

If he’d been anyone else, he’d already be in pain for what he’d done. “I don’t like people interfering in my life.”

“Are we back to the dick things you think I’ve done? I did it because I wanted you to stay away from her.”

“I appreciate your honesty.” And I meant that. It was a relief to know I wasn’t going to have to threaten him to get the answers I needed.

He got more relaxed as we started to talk, pulling out a barstool and studying me across the room.
