Chapter 4

Macy

We pull up to the massive home with stone décor around the elaborate fountain that is in the middle of the driveway. My stomach drops as he parks the car at the bottom of the steps leading to the front door. I mean I knew he had money but the most I’d experienced so far was his Maserati. This was real. Too real.

I open the car door but he's already outside it waiting to help me. I take his hand and flash a smile. I try to hide my trembling nerves and the fact that I feel so out of place. We walk up the steps to the large wooden doors and Archer types a code in the pad so the door unlocks. He walks in before me and my eyes widen as I fear stepping on the beautiful marble floor.

God, please don’t let me slip.

He told me to bring my bathing suit, so I assumed we were swimming and kept my attire simple with a light blue floral sundress over it. This weekend has been amazing and still, for some reason, I keep feeling like I need to pinch myself to make sure it’s real.

Coming to his home is only making it worse. It has only verified my worst fear of what different worlds we came from. Sure we can enjoy each other while we are alone, but I wouldn't know how to act in front of his peers, and definitely not in front of Liza.

Ugh, Liza.

I swallow the lump in my throat as I wait for him to return downstairs in his swimwear as well. I walk the grand living area and see the plethora of family photos scattered on the mantle, the walls, and more. Liza hasn’t changed a bit. She looks just as polished as ever and it makes me feel so…plain.

Images of that day start to bubble up in my mind and then I hear him behind me.

“You’re beautiful,” his arms wrap around my waist as his lips nuzzle into my neck.

The worry and the doubt are washed away at his touch and a smile lifts on my face.

“Let’s go for a swim,” he takes my hand and leads the way out back to his pool. His backyard is grand and bright with every pool, lounge, or grilling amenity you could think of and I try not to hang my jaw open as I follow him to a lounge chair. The pool catches my eye next with the elaborately styled waterfall in the middle where the water is falling from beautifully carved stones.

We pull our clothes off and I shyly walk to the edge of the pool as he runs past me and jumps in, throwing large splashes of drops in my direction.

I scream playfully at the cold water and hurry around to the steps of the shallow end to join him. He sees me and swims to meet me. His eyes drag up and down my body like he’s ready to pounce me and I try to hurry in for the shelter of the water.

Once I meet him, I have to try my hardest not to drag my gaze all over his beautiful bare muscular chest. He’s chiseled like a Greek God. And his smile…it’s to die for.

“Can you swim?” he asks kindly, “I’m sorry I just assumed?”

“Yes,” I giggle, “I can swim.”

“Okay good,” he laughs.

I splash him this time and he turns and squints, "your turn to get splashed," I giggle and then hold my breath as I dive into the water and swim out to the deep end.

I hear him follow me and when I turn around after wiping the water from my eyes, he’s there. His arms wrap around my waist as he pulls me close and kisses me. My stomach flutters and my feet forget to move and I guess his do too because we both sink below the water.

We let go of each other and rise laughing at our awkwardness.

“Sorry,” he laughs, “I’m not that good at this cool guy stuff.”

I’m surprised to hear him say that. I thought for sure he had way more practice than me at dating. I figured he could and did get anyone he wanted any time he wanted.

Could I be so wrong about him? What else am I wrong about?

I decide to probe more.

I swim over to the long float in the water and drape myself over it facing him as he moves to the wall, “So I never pegged you for a science nerd.”

“Hey, I’m not a nerd,” his dimple pops up with his smile.

“Okay,” I roll my eyes playfully. “So if you’re so fascinated with it, why didn’t you go to college to pursue it? I mean I know you said your dad wanted you to do the family business but-“

“Yeah…you don’t know my dad,” he shakes his head as his eyes drift off, “it just wasn’t an option.”
