Page 8 of Your Path To Me

“Oh, that’s a shame,” I feel like I’ve pushed too far and I need to back off.

“Yeah but I’ve got a plan,” he continues and his eyes seem to light up, “see I may not have been the scientist I wanted but I plan to invest in some companies that are going to help change the world.”

Watching him like that warms my heart and I feel like there really is so much more to this man than I initially thought. Like maybe the man in the basement is the man he is all the time.

“And that’s why I have to keep him straight,” a low baritone voice joins us as I squint and look up to see who. “You always have your head in the clouds son.”

My jaw drops a bit and I feel the embarrassment for Archer.

“Dad what are you doing here?”

“Well, I’ve been trying to get ahold of you since yesterday morning but you keep disregarding my phone calls. Some…business…has come up and I needed you to fly to Chicago to handle it,” his voice sounds like a low growl, riddled with upset.

“I’ve been busy,” Archer doesn’t seem embarrassed though. He doesn’t even seem bothered. He actually seems…pissed.

The tall polished man in the perfect black slacks and button-up shirt looks over at me and I see him around the sun now. His grey hair is slicked in a side part and his face shows his years of wisdom and yet he's still very handsome. I can see where Archer gets his looks now.

His eyes narrow at me as he seems to be thinking all kinds of rude thoughts…like he realizes I’m the reason Archer is “busy”. He’s not happy.

Does he know that I don’t belong in his world too? Is it that obvious?

Archer notices him noticing me and diverts his attention, “Well I haven’t had a weekend off in a very long time father. I think work can wait until Monday morning. We’re only half a day away now.”

His dad straightens his posture flattening his lips together and sliding his hands in his pockets. He takes a deep breath in and thinks for a moment until a low groan comes from him, "I guess." He turns and throws his hand up in the air with a wave, “I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning.”

That was the most uncomfortable thing I’ve been through in some time…and exactly what I was worried about.

Did you see the way he looked at me?
