“I need to know what you like, how you like it. If you need to adjust a position, or ask me to do something. I especially want to know if you don’t like something. We have to discuss issues and ideas — games we want to play and fantasies we have. Becoming lovers doesn’t give you clairvoyant abilities, you know. Besides, conversation is some of the best foreplay.”

“I like your rules.”

“I like you,” he whispers. “I’m glad you’re here with me tonight, Lainey Bird.”

Long minutes of silence stretch between us as we cuddle together. Connor wraps us in a soft sheet and a light blanket. I feel his body relax against mine as we drift off to sleep. I’m curious to learn more about this man, however. I work up my courage to ask one final question before I close my eyes and allow myself to completely drift away.

“What were their names? The men you saved in Afghanistan?” I ask tentatively.

“John Galloway and Ian McGuire,” he replies in a sleepy voice.

I softly stroke the lion and feel his body relax and finally surrender to sleep again. The darkness shrouds us and, for just these few moments, we are alone in the universe. Trapped somewhere between sleeping and waking, between yesterday and tomorrow, adrift in pillow talk and kisses and touches and ecstasy, and I never want to leave. I want to stay right here, languishing in the in-between with Connor until all the stars in the sky have turned to dust.
